Literary Context
These verses sit within Zephaniah’s opening announcement of sweeping judgment that narrows from the whole creation (1:2–3) to Judah’s capital (1:4). The logic moves from “I will act broadly” to “here is where the problem is most visible.” The speech is framed as God’s own resolve (“I will…”), and it lists representative groups to show the range of compromised worship: official religion, household practices, public pledges, and private neglect. This prepares for the wider “day of the LORD” theme that unfolds in the chapter (1:7–18).
Historical Context
Zephaniah prophesies in Judah during the reign of Josiah, when older patterns from prior kings had left a tangled religious landscape. Assyrian power and influence had shaped the region’s politics and cultural life, and Judah had absorbed practices common across the Near East, including devotion to Baal, veneration of celestial bodies, and multiple forms of priestly service. Even where Yahweh was still named, worship could be blended with other loyalties or reduced to public habit. The passage reflects a city where competing religious practices coexist rather than a unified, single-focus worship culture.
Theological Significance
Zephaniah 1:4–6 presents God as personally and intentionally moving against Judah and Jerusalem because their worship has become corrupt and hollow. That corruption includes open allegiance to other powers (Baal and astral worship), but the text also stresses mixed loyalty—people using ’s name while binding themselves to another object of trust.

Some differences center on what exactly is being removed and who exactly is being targeted:
The Hebrew terms can be read more than one way, and the passage is written as a compact list rather than a detailed explanation. Also, Judah’s historical setting included overlapping religious practices, so the same words could point either to specific people or to broader, embedded systems.
Explicitly, the text claims God will act against Judah and Jerusalem, cutting off Baal’s remaining presence, and removing the standing of priests tied to idolatry. It also explicitly identifies several kinds of compromised worship: astral worship on rooftops, dual oaths (by Yahweh and by Malcam), and a population that has either turned back from following Yahweh or never sought or inquired of him.
As a theological inference from these claims, the passage portrays covenant loyalty as more than keeping Yahweh’s name in use; it involves exclusive allegiance that includes public practice, formal speech (oaths), and the everyday posture of seeking or ignoring God. The passage also frames judgment as beginning with God’s own people, setting up the wider “day of the LORD” message later in the chapter (cf. Zephaniah 1:7).
