Question 1

What groups or behaviors are singled out in Zephaniah 1:4–6, and how do they progress through the passage?

Accepted Answer

The passage names several targets in a widening sweep. It begins with Judah and Jerusalem as a whole (v.4), then narrows to Baal’s remaining presence and priests connected to idolatrous worship. It then shifts to visible household/public practices: people worshiping the “host of the sky” on rooftops (v.5). Next are people whose spoken commitments show divided loyalty: they swear by Yahweh and also by Malcam (v.5). Finally, it addresses quieter failures: those who have turned back from following Yahweh, and those who do not seek or inquire of him (v.6). The list moves from formal religion to daily practice to inner disengagement.

Question 2

In verse 4, what does it mean that God will “stretch out” his hand against Judah and Jerusalem?

Accepted Answer

“Stretch out my hand” is action language: God is not merely observing; he is intervening with intent. Within this section, that intervention is expressed as removal and cutting off—ending Baal’s remaining presence “from this place” and eliminating the names/standing of priests tied to idolatrous worship. The phrase also connects to the broader opening of the chapter, where God announces sweeping judgment and then focuses it on Judah’s capital. The emphasis is that judgment is deliberate and targeted, not random disaster, and it begins where covenant responsibility is greatest: among God’s own people in Jerusalem.

Question 3

How does the passage describe “mixed worship” in verse 5, and why is it treated as serious?

Accepted Answer

Mixed worship is described in two concrete ways. First, some worship the “host of the sky” on rooftops—an act that publicly signals devotion to celestial powers. Second, others “worship and swear by Yahweh” while also swearing by Malcam. That second detail shows divided allegiance in a formal, binding way: they use Yahweh’s name but also attach themselves to another power through oath-taking. The passage treats this as serious because it presents loyalty to Yahweh as incompatible with sharing worship or covenant-like commitments with rival gods. The problem is not only ignorance but a deliberate blending that empties devotion of its exclusive focus.

Question 4

What is the force of “cut off the names” of certain priests (v.4)?

Accepted Answer

In context, “cut off the names” goes beyond removing a label from a record. It signals the end of their recognized place and continuing influence. Names represent identity, reputation, and the ability to function publicly. So the statement implies that God will remove the social and religious standing of priests tied to Baal/idolatry, not merely criticize them. This matches the passage’s pattern of describing judgment as concrete removal: Baal’s “remnant” is eliminated, and the personnel who maintained those practices lose their role. The focus is on clearing out an entrenched religious infrastructure, not just correcting private beliefs.

Question 5

What does verse 6 add by mentioning both “turned back” people and people who never “sought” or “inquired”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 broadens the target beyond active participation in rival worship. “Turned back from following Yahweh” suggests reversal—people who once aligned themselves with Yahweh but have withdrawn. Then the text adds another category: those who have not sought Yahweh and have not inquired of him at all. That points to religious indifference or disengagement rather than overt idolatry. Together, the two phrases show that the problem in Judah includes both betrayal and apathy: some abandon prior commitment, others live as though Yahweh is irrelevant. The passage treats both as culpable failures of covenant relationship.

Question 6

Based on this unit, what seems to be the relationship between public ritual, spoken oaths, and true allegiance?

Accepted Answer

The unit links ritual practice and spoken oaths as outward indicators of what a community truly trusts. Rooftop worship is a visible ritual; dual oaths are public speech acts that formally declare loyalty. By placing them side by side, the passage implies that true allegiance is not hidden from view: it shows up in where people direct worship and in the binding promises they make. At the same time, verse 6 shows that allegiance is also revealed by what people do not do—failing to seek or inquire of Yahweh. The passage therefore treats both action and omission as meaningful expressions of loyalty.

Question 7

How does the focus on Judah and Jerusalem in 1:4 relate to the broader opening of Zephaniah 1?

Accepted Answer

Zephaniah 1 opens with a sweeping announcement of judgment that sounds universal (1:2–3). Verse 4 then narrows the lens to Judah and Jerusalem, showing where the problem is most visible and urgent. This shift suggests a rhetorical movement from “God will act broadly” to “here is the concrete corruption that warrants it.” The capital city becomes a representative center: official religion, household practices, oaths, and everyday indifference are all present there. So 1:4–6 functions as the first detailed explanation of why judgment is coming, preparing for the larger “day of the LORD” development later in the chapter.
