The judgment language is intentionally intense. “Indignation,” “fierce anger,” and the “fire of my jealousy” frame the coming action as Yahweh’s decisive response to entrenched rebellion (the immediate context in 3:1–7). At the same time, the shift in v.9 indicates that the reckoning is not the last word.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

Who is being told to “wait.” Some read the audience as Judah (especially the faithful remnant within Judah) being told to endure until Yahweh acts. Others think the wording intentionally widens, as if the call to “wait” anticipates a larger group who will eventually join in the purified worship described in vv.9–10.

How “all the earth” functions. Some take the scope as straightforwardly universal: a truly global judgment and reset of humanity’s posture toward Yahweh. Others take it as “total” in rhetorical force—describing comprehensive judgment without requiring that every geographic region is equally in view.

What “purify the lips” means. Some interpret it mainly as worship-language: people are enabled to speak rightly about Yahweh (truthful confession, prayer, praise) instead of corrupt speech tied to false worship. Others read it more broadly as moral and communal renewal that shows up in speech but includes deeper inner change.

Who “my dispersed people” are. Some understand “the daughter of my dispersed people” as Yahweh’s scattered covenant people (Judah/Israel) returning to worship from far away. Others think the phrase may also be elastic enough to include former outsiders who have become Yahweh’s “worshipers,” since vv.9–10 emphasize “peoples” from distant regions.

Why the disagreement exists

The passage uses expansive, poetic phrases (“all the earth,” “purify the lips,” “beyond the rivers of Cush”) that can be read either as literal geographic universals or as sweeping prophetic language meant to stress completeness. Also, the unit moves quickly from judgment on gathered nations (v.8) to renewed worship by “the peoples” (v.9), raising questions about continuity: are these the same nations after judgment, or a different group that emerges afterward?

What this passage clearly contributes

1. Yahweh’s “day” involves both judgment and a future reordering of human worship (sequence marked by “For then”).
2. The goal after judgment is not merely silence but unified calling on Yahweh’s name and coordinated service (“shoulder to shoulder”).
3. The horizon is not only local to Jerusalem; distant regions are explicitly named (“beyond the rivers of Cush”), and the outcome includes worldwide participation in honoring Yahweh (Zephaniah 3:8–3:10).
