Historical Context
Chronicles is commonly set in the Persian-period setting of a restored Judah, when questions of community organization, inherited roles, and land arrangements mattered for rebuilding public life. “First lot” (v. 54): some understand this as “first in order” within the chapter’s overall distribution lists; others understand it as highlighting priority for the priestly line among the Kohathites. Either way, the verse explicitly says this group’s towns are assigned by an allotment.
Town names (vv. 58–60): some readers see “Hilen” as the same place known by another name in other biblical lists. The main point of the passage does not depend on resolving the exact modern identification.
The chapter uses brief labels (“first lot”) without explaining the selection process in detail, and ancient place-names can appear in slightly different forms across lists. Those two factors leave room for more than one reasonable reconstruction.
It supports a picture of ordered, recognized priestly provision: Aaron’s descendants have designated towns, including Hebron as a city of refuge (v. 57), and each town includes surrounding pasture-lands. It also shows that priestly residence did not erase existing family land claims (Caleb’s fields and villages remain his). Finally, it indicates that priestly towns were spread across tribal territories, including Judah and Benjamin, and that the total for this priestly group is thirteen towns (v. 60).
