Question 1

Who are “the rest of the sons of Kohath” in v. 61, and what does that phrase suggest about the surrounding context?

Accepted Answer

In v. 61, “the rest of the sons of Kohath” implies that some Kohathites have already been discussed or assigned elsewhere in the larger chapter. The phrase signals that the writer is not starting the Kohathite story from scratch but is completing it. This fits the chapter’s flow: it moves from ancestry to allocations, and it includes priestly lines connected to Kohath earlier. So “the rest” most naturally means “the remaining Kohathite families not covered in the earlier part of the distribution,” rather than “Kohathites as a whole.”

Question 2

What does the repeated mention of assignment “by lot” contribute to how the town allotments are presented?

Accepted Answer

The passage emphasizes that the towns were assigned “by lot” (vv. 61, 63, 65). Explicitly, this shows the distribution was not described as random seizure or private negotiation but as a recognized communal procedure for dividing resources and responsibilities. In context, it also supports the idea of an orderly, structured placement of Levite groups across Israel. Theological inference may go further and connect lots with divine oversight in Israel’s traditions, but the text itself mainly uses “by lot” to underline legitimacy and public fairness in the allotment process.

Question 3

List the town totals for Kohath, Gershom, and Merari here, and name the tribal territories associated with each total.

Accepted Answer

Kohath’s remaining families receive ten towns (v. 61), drawn from Ephraim and Dan and “half of Manasseh” (the wording is compressed but the passage clearly includes Manasseh as part of the source). Gershom’s families receive thirteen towns (v. 62) from Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Manasseh in Bashan. Merari’s families receive twelve towns (v. 63) from Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. The totals and tribal sources are explicit, and together they show Levite settlement spread across multiple tribal areas, including regions east of the Jordan.

Question 4

What is the significance of mentioning “Manasseh in Bashan” (v. 62) alongside other tribal territories?

Accepted Answer

“Manasseh in Bashan” points to a Manassite territory associated with Bashan, which is east of the Jordan and known in Israel’s memory as a distinct region. In the passage, this detail serves a geographical purpose: some Levitical towns come from areas beyond the central hill country and even beyond the Jordan River. It reinforces the idea that Levitical placement and support were not limited to one cluster of tribes near Jerusalem but were distributed across Israel’s broader map, including Transjordan locations.

Question 5

According to vv. 64–65, who is portrayed as giving the Levites their towns, and what exactly is included with the towns?

Accepted Answer

Verses 64–65 explicitly say “the children of Israel” gave towns to the Levites (v. 64), framing the provision as a national act rather than the initiative of only one tribe. The towns are given “with their suburbs,” meaning the surrounding pasturelands/open lands attached to the towns. Verse 65 adds that some towns were given by lot from Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin and that these are “mentioned by name,” preparing for the detailed list that follows. The passage thus combines responsibility (Israel gives) with practical support (towns plus lands).

Question 6

How do vv. 64–65 function in the flow of this section: summary, transition, or both? What in the wording supports your answer?

Accepted Answer

The wording supports both a summary and a transition, which is why readers differ. It clearly summarizes by restating the core idea: Israel gave the Levites towns with pasturelands (v. 64). But v. 65 also narrows attention to specific tribes (Judah, Simeon, Benjamin) and says “these cities which are mentioned by name,” which sounds like a forward-pointing introduction to the next detailed list. The tension comes from how general v. 64 sounds and how specific v. 65 becomes, making it plausible that the author is both wrapping up and setting up the next section.
