One live question is what “Azzah” refers to. Some read it as Gaza (a well-known coastal city). Others argue it may be a different place with a similar name, since Gaza is far southwest compared with several other names in the list.

A second question is how literally to take “by the borders of… Manasseh.” Some take it as a tight border list (towns right along an edge). Others read it more loosely as “in the Manasseh border-region,” which could cover a broader, less precise zone.

A third question is whether the list reflects a single historical moment or an idealized memory of tribal holdings. Some treat it as a snapshot of actual control at a certain time; others see it as a record of traditional claims and identity, even if political control shifted over centuries.
