7:28Meaning
What Ephraim’s holdings include The verse says their “possessions and habitations” included Bethel and its surrounding towns. It then describes additional places by direction: eastward is Naaran, and westward is Gezer with its towns. It adds Shechem with its towns, extending the list “to Azzah and the towns of it,” marking a further limit or endpoint.
Unit 2 (v. 29a): Places along Manasseh’s border
The next verse adds locations “by the borders of the children of Manasseh,” naming Beth-shean, Taanach, Megiddo, and Dor, and for each it again includes the attached towns. The boundary wording suggests these sites are near or along Manasseh’s edge rather than deep inside a single compact area.
Unit 3 (v. 29b): Final identification of the settlers
The section ends by stating that the “children of Joseph the son of Israel” lived in these places. This closing line gathers the Ephraim-and-Manasseh references into one Joseph heading and treats the towns list as defining where that broader Joseph grouping resided (compare the Joseph framing in 1 Chronicles 7:20–27).
