6:12Meaning
Freedom is tested by benefit and by mastery Paul quotes a claim: “All things are lawful for me.” Twice he counters it. First, he says not everything is beneficial or helpful. Second, even if something is permitted, he refuses anything that would take control of him—freedom is not meant to become a new kind of slavery.
Unit 2 (v. 13a): Food and stomach are temporary
He quotes another slogan about appetite: food fits the stomach, and the stomach fits food. Paul answers that God will bring both to an end, treating this pair as temporary and limited. The point is not to deny eating, but to deny that appetite sets the pattern for all bodily choices.
Unit 3 (v. 13b): The body has a different purpose
Paul shifts from “stomach” to “body.” The body is not meant for sexual immorality; it is “for the Lord,” and the Lord is “for the body.” This frames sexual behavior as belonging to a relationship and purpose, not merely to personal appetite or personal rights. The repeated “for” language marks a contrast in what the body is oriented toward.
