1:6Meaning
Claiming fellowship while walking in darkness The writer imagines someone saying, “We have fellowship with him,” meaning with God. But if that person’s ongoing way of life is described as “walking in the darkness,” the writer calls the claim a lie. The person is also said not to be “doing the truth,” meaning their life is not aligned with what is true.
Unit 2 (v. 7a): Walking in the light like God is in the light
A contrasting case follows: if “we” walk in the light in a way that corresponds to God’s own light, then fellowship is present. The comparison (“as he is in the light”) sets God’s character as the reference point for what “light” means here.
Unit 3 (v. 7b): Results—shared fellowship and cleansing
Two outcomes are stated. First, “we have fellowship with one another,” presenting shared community life as the visible expression of walking in the light. Second, “the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son” is said to cleanse “us” from all sin, describing an ongoing remedy that accompanies life in the light.
