Question 1

What does Adonijah do in verses 5–6 that makes his claim visible to the public, not just private ambition?

Accepted Answer

He first states the claim (“I will be king”) and then acts it out with a royal-style parade: chariots, horsemen, and fifty runners ahead of him. The actions look like a public announcement meant to shape opinion, not a quiet plan.

Question 2

According to the narrator, what had David not done with Adonijah, and why might that detail matter for the story?

Accepted Answer

David had not confronted him with a correcting question like, “Why have you done so?” The detail matters because it suggests a leadership and parenting gap that leaves space for Adonijah’s self-promotion to grow unchecked.

Question 3

Why does the passage mention Adonijah’s appearance and that he was born after Absalom (v. 6)?

Accepted Answer

The text does not explicitly state the reason, but it supplies likely “credentials” people would notice: he is impressive and he comes after an older brother who had already been a major rival (Absalom). The point is that Adonijah’s bid is not random; he has features that could make the claim seem believable.

Question 4

How do verses 7–8 show a split among Israel’s leaders, and what kinds of authority are represented on each side?

Accepted Answer

Adonijah gains support from Joab (military command) and Abiathar (priestly influence). But he lacks Zadok (another priest), Benaiah (a key commander), Nathan (prophetic voice), and David’s mighty men (elite force). The split is across military, priestly, and prophetic leadership.

Question 5

What does Adonijah’s sacrifice-feast (vv. 9–10) accomplish socially and politically within the story?

Accepted Answer

It gathers a crowd around a shared meal connected with sacrifices, which can function as a public show of unity and approval. In the story it also works as a political rally: the invite list helps create the appearance that “everyone important” is already on board.

Question 6

Who is invited and who is excluded in verses 9–10, and what does that suggest about Adonijah’s strategy?

Accepted Answer

Invited: his brothers (the king’s sons) and many of the king’s servants from Judah. Excluded: Nathan, Benaiah, the mighty men, and Solomon. The exclusions suggest Adonijah is trying to prevent opposition from organizing and to keep an alternative candidate (Solomon) out of sight during the public moment.

Question 7

From this unit alone, what signals suggest Adonijah is not simply honoring his father but attempting to claim power early?

Accepted Answer

Signals include: a self-made royal declaration, royal-style display, recruiting high-impact supporters, and hosting a large gathering where he controls the guest list—especially excluding the people most likely to question his move. The unit frames the event as a coordinated push for kingship rather than a neutral celebration.
