1:5-6Meaning
Adonijah promotes himself and is portrayed as unchecked Adonijah, identified as Haggith’s son, “exalts himself” by declaring, “I will be king” (1 Kings 1:5). He then acts out that claim with the outward trappings of royalty: chariots, horsemen, and fifty men running ahead of him, like a public escort. The narrator adds background: David had never confronted or restrained him by asking, “Why have you done so?” (1 Kings 1:6). Adonijah is also described as impressive in appearance and as born after Absalom, information that helps explain why he might see himself as a plausible successor.
