Shared ground
These verses open 1 Kings by showing David’s physical decline: he is old, weak, and cannot keep warm even under many coverings. That weakness is not just medical detail; it creates a setting where other people in the royal household start taking initiative.
The attendants propose a practical form of close care: a young woman is to stay near David, keep him warm, and serve him. The search is organized “through all the borders of Israel,” showing the court’s ability to mobilize resources even while the king himself is frail.
Abishag is introduced with emphasis on her youth and beauty, and on her role as a caregiver. The narrator then adds a clear boundary statement: David did not have sexual relations with her. That note matters because it shapes how her presence in the royal household should be understood in the story.
