Why the disagreement exists The disagreements come from ambiguity in the relational phrase “your lord” and from the passage’s brevity. The narrator summarizes movements without clarifying every reference point, and the story’s wider setting (multiple Philistine rulers; David’s unusual status as a foreign commander) makes more than one referent plausible.
