He describes the opponents as “the enemies of my lord the king,” wording that presents himself as aligned with Achish’s royal interests.

Literary Context
This exchange sits inside the larger scene where Philistine forces gather to march, and Philistine commanders object to David’s presence among them. The setting is the late period of Saul’s reign, when David is living among the Philistines for safety and has become tied, at least outwardly, to Philistine military movements. Philistia was organized around multiple city-rulers who could act together in wartime, and a leader like Achish could be limited by the shared decision of other commanders.
