What “without the true God… without law” means. Some take this as describing widespread idolatry and abandonment of Yahweh’s worship. Others take it as describing practical absence of trustworthy guidance—Yahweh not acknowledged in public life, and Torah-based instruction and enforcement not functioning—without claiming every individual rejected Yahweh.
How direct God’s role is in the turmoil (v. 6). Some take “God did vex them” as direct divine action behind the unrest. Others take it as God’s governing hand working through the consequences of the breakdown and through historical conflicts, without specifying the mechanism.
