The scale of what is brought The writer reports specific numbers for the whole-burnt offerings: seventy bulls, one hundred rams, and two hundred lambs, all given as whole-burnt offerings to Yahweh. Then additional “consecrated things” are counted—six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep—indicating more dedicated animals beyond the earlier list.
Staff shortage and Levite help A problem arises: there are too few priests to skin all the whole-burnt offerings. Levites, called the priests’ “brothers,” help with the work until it is finished and until the priests complete their own preparation. The narrator explains this by saying the Levites showed greater readiness of heart for the needed preparation than the priests.
Literary Context
This passage sits within the narrative of Hezekiah’s early reforms in 2 Chronicles 29, where the temple is reopened, cleansed, and brought back into use after a period of neglect. Just before these verses, worship is reintroduced with music, singing, and offerings, and the leaders and people respond together. These closing lines (vv. 31–36) show the public follow-through: the renewed worship is not only a ceremony led from the top but becomes a widespread, voluntary response. The chapter ends by highlighting both restored order in temple service and the shared joy of king and people.

The numbers (vv.32–33) communicate scale. The point is not only that offerings happened, but that they happened in abundance and in a way the community could observe and count.

Two main questions draw different readings.
First, what exactly are the “consecrated things” (v.33)? Some read them as additional animals dedicated for other sacrificial purposes beyond the burnt offerings already counted (vv.32–33 taken as two categories). Others think v.33 is a broader summary label for the same donated animals, with the author highlighting a second tally rather than a different sacrificial class.
Second, what does “more upright in heart…than the priests” mean (v.34)? Some take it as a statement about sincerity and moral readiness. Others take it more narrowly as practical readiness: the Levites were prepared sooner and therefore could step in when needed.
The passage reports totals and roles, but it does not fully explain the categories (“consecrated things”) or spell out the exact comparison being made (“upright in heart”). It also describes an unusual moment—Levites assisting with a task typically associated with priests—without giving a long legal explanation, so readers infer how exceptional or routine this help was.
The text explicitly presents renewed worship as both structured and generous: named offerings, large totals, and a workflow that requires enough sanctified staff. It also explicitly ties community joy to God’s prior enabling (“God had prepared for the people”) and to the unexpectedly rapid completion (“done suddenly,” v.36).
