Historical Context
The scene assumes Judah as a smaller kingdom living under the shadow of Assyrian imperial power in the seventh century BC, when Assyria could pressure local rulers through campaigns, arrests, and forced relocations. The mention of Assyrian commanders and transport to Babylon reflects imperial control over key cities and administrative centers in Mesopotamia, even before the later Babylonian empire became dominant.
