Oath at the altar and God’s judgment If someone wrongs a neighbor and is put under an oath, he comes to the temple and swears before the altar. Solomon asks God to hear from heaven and act as judge: to bring consequences back on the guilty person and to treat the innocent person as innocent.
Defeat in war and return to the land If Israel is struck down by enemies because they have offended God, and then they turn back, confess God’s name, and pray at the temple, Solomon asks God to hear, forgive, and bring them back to the land given to them and their ancestors.
