Question 1

What is the basic structure of 2 Chronicles 7:17–18 (condition and outcome), and how is it signaled in the wording?

Accepted Answer

The passage is shaped as a direct “if… then…” statement. The condition is introduced with “As for you, if you will walk before me…” and then expanded with three parallel descriptions of obedience: walking as David walked, doing all God commanded, and keeping statutes and ordinances. The outcome begins with “then I will establish the throne of your kingdom,” stating what God will do in response. The final clause (“according as I covenanted with David… saying…”) anchors that outcome in an earlier pledge rather than treating it as a brand-new promise.

Question 2

How does the text define “walk before me as David your father walked” using the rest of verse 17?

Accepted Answer

Verse 17 does not leave “walk before me” vague. It immediately explains the idea with concrete obedience language: “do according to all that I have commanded you” and “keep my statutes and my ordinances.” So “walking” here is not primarily about travel or ritual but about a lived pattern of loyalty in God’s presence, expressed in doing what God has commanded. David functions as the benchmark for that kind of kingship, and the verse frames it as comprehensive rather than selective (“all that I have commanded”).

Question 3

Who is being addressed, and what difference does that make for how the condition is heard within the narrative?

Accepted Answer

God addresses Solomon personally (“As for you”), making the king the immediate focus of the condition. The obedience named in the verse is cast as Solomon’s responsibility: what he does, what he keeps, how he walks. That matters because the promised result also concerns the king’s realm (“the throne of your kingdom”). Even if later implications extend to descendants (since a royal line is in view), the explicit speaker-to-hearer relationship in these verses is direct: God speaks to Solomon about Solomon’s conduct and the stability attached to it.

Question 4

What is promised in verse 18, and how is it connected to the earlier covenant with David?

Accepted Answer

Verse 18 promises that God will “establish the throne” of Solomon’s kingdom if the condition of verse 17 is met. The promise is explicitly said to match (“according as”) what God previously covenanted with David. The covenant content is summarized as a continuing supply of a male ruler from David’s line: “There shall not fail you a man to be ruler in Israel.” So the text links Solomon’s potential throne stability to the David covenant, presenting Solomon’s obedience as aligned with the way that covenant promise is to be experienced.

Question 5

In these verses, what is the relationship between commands, statutes, and ordinances?

Accepted Answer

The verse stacks related terms to stress full-spectrum obedience. “All that I have commanded you” is broad and personal, highlighting God’s direct instruction to Solomon. “My statutes” and “my ordinances” add the sense of established, defined expectations that govern life and rule. The point is not to sort them into neat categories inside the verse, but to pile up language that communicates completeness: Solomon’s faithful “walk” includes doing what God has said and continuing to observe God’s established standards for covenant life.

Question 6

What part of the promise is explicitly conditional in this passage, and what part is presented as rooted in an earlier pledge?

Accepted Answer

The conditional part is explicit: “if you will walk… and do… and keep… then I will establish the throne.” The establishment of Solomon’s throne is directly tied to Solomon’s obedience in the “if” clause. At the same time, verse 18 frames this establishment as consistent with what God already covenanted with David. The text therefore presents two linked realities: Solomon’s obedience is required for the promised establishment in this moment, and the promise itself is grounded in God’s prior covenant language about David’s ruling line.

Question 7

How do verses 17–18 prepare for the warning that follows in 7:19–22 (without quoting those later verses)?

Accepted Answer

Verses 17–18 lay down the positive side of a two-outcome framework: obedience leads to an established throne, tied to God’s covenant with David. Because that framework is conditional (“if… then…”), it naturally sets up a contrasting alternative if the condition is not met. The emphasis on keeping God’s commands and statutes also anticipates that the next section will define what it means to abandon them and what consequences follow. So these verses function as the “faithfulness leads to stability” half of a larger covenant-logic argument.
