Question 1

What actions are described as “turning away” in verse 19?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 defines “turning away” with three related movements: (1) forsaking God’s statutes and commandments that were “set before” the people, (2) going after other gods, and (3) serving and worshiping those gods. The warning is not triggered by a vague decline in enthusiasm but by a concrete change of allegiance shown in obedience and worship. The language makes idolatry the decisive breach while also including the broader abandonment of the instruction already given.

Question 2

How does verse 20 connect the land and the temple in the stated consequences?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 treats the land and the temple as tied together signs of God’s covenant favor. If the people turn away, God says he will uproot them from the land he gave them, and he will also cast the temple (“this house”) out of his sight, even though it had been made holy for his name. The passage presents these as linked outcomes, not separate topics: national removal and temple rejection belong to the same reversal of earlier gifts.

Question 3

What does the passage say will happen to the temple’s reputation among other peoples (v. 20)?

Accepted Answer

The text says the temple will become “a proverb and a byword among all peoples.” In other words, it will turn into a widely repeated example or cautionary saying, used publicly and memorably. The point is reputational and social: the fall of a famous sanctuary would be talked about beyond Israel, and the story would function as a negative lesson. This matches the later scene where passersby react with astonishment and questions.

Question 4

What role do “passersby” play in verses 21–22?

Accepted Answer

Passersby are presented as outside observers who see the devastated “high” (impressive) house and are shocked. Their question—why Yahweh did this to the land and the house—sets up the text’s explanation. The passage then supplies the answer they will receive: the disaster is attributed to Israel forsaking Yahweh (the God who brought their ancestors out of Egypt) and taking hold of other gods. This makes the catastrophe a public, interpretable event with a stated moral cause.

Question 5

How does verse 22 summarize the reason for the calamity, and what details does it include?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 gives a compressed explanation with several details: they forsook Yahweh; Yahweh is identified as the God of their fathers and the one who brought them out of Egypt; they “laid hold on” other gods; and they worshiped and served those gods. The conclusion (“therefore he brought all this evil/calamity”) frames the disaster as a reasoned outcome within the covenant story, not merely an unfortunate coincidence.

Question 6

What is the relationship between God sanctifying the house and later rejecting it (v. 20)?

Accepted Answer

The text holds both ideas together without treating them as contradictory. God says he had made the house holy for his name, yet he also warns that he will cast it out of his sight if the people abandon him. The clear contribution is that prior consecration does not function as an unconditional guarantee against rejection. The temple’s holiness and significance remain real, but the passage portrays its standing as tied to continued covenant loyalty rather than automatic permanence.

Question 7

What does the repeated emphasis on “other gods” contribute to the logic of the warning (vv. 19, 22)?

Accepted Answer

The passage repeats “other gods” as the central explanation for reversal. Verse 19 names serving and worshiping other gods as the pivotal breach, and verse 22 repeats that they took hold of, worshiped, and served other gods. This repetition makes the warning more specific than a general threat about wrongdoing: the core issue is exchanged worship and allegiance. The logic is that turning from Yahweh to rivals brings land-loss and temple rejection as the stated consequences.
