Paul is reluctantly doing the kind of self-defense he normally criticizes. His “foolishness” (v.1) is not mindless behavior but a self-conscious way of talking that feels improper to him, because it resembles the competitive comparisons the Corinthians have been rewarding.

Paul describes his concern as “godly jealousy” (v.2): a protective care for the Corinthians’ loyalty to Christ. He uses a marriage image: he has “pledged” them to one husband, with the goal of presenting them as a pure bride to Christ. That image makes Paul’s role sound like a founder/guardian who wants the relationship between the church and Christ to remain exclusive.

Paul’s fear is that their minds will be pulled away from “simplicity toward Christ” (v.3)—a straightforward, undivided devotion and fidelity. He frames the danger as deception, echoing Eve and the serpent.

Paul is alarmed that they “put up with” rival preaching: “another Jesus,” a “different” different spirit, and a different gospel (v.4). That wording assumes there is a real standard—what Paul and his coworkers first preached and what the Corinthians first received.

He then compares himself to the “very best apostles” (v.5), admits weakness in public speaking but not in knowledge (v.6), and raises the controversial topic of money: he preached “for nothing” (v.7), which some apparently treated as dishonorable or suspicious.

1) What “the very best apostles” means (v.5). Some read Paul as speaking straight: he is claiming equal standing with the highest-ranking, legitimate apostles.

Others read it as a pointed, ironic title for the rival teachers he will criticize; “very best” is then Paul’s way of mocking their self-promotion while still insisting he is not inferior.

2) What “simplicity toward Christ” is emphasizing (v.3). Some take it mainly as single-minded loyalty: a heart-level and community-level faithfulness to Christ alone.

Others take it mainly as the plain, unmanipulated message about Christ: their thinking is being complicated and redirected by persuasive speech into a distorted version of the gospel.

3) Who “he who comes” is (v.4). Some read it as a particular influential figure.

Others read it as a general description of whatever visiting teacher fits this pattern.

Why the disagreement exists

Paul’s language is compressed and rhetorically sharp. He uses loaded phrases (“foolishness,” “very best apostles,” “another Jesus”) without naming the rival teachers, and he mixes metaphor (marriage) with ministry credentials (speech, knowledge, money). That leaves multiple plausible ways to decide how much is literal, how much is sarcastic, and how specific the opponents are.
