Question 1

What does Paul claim happened financially between him, the Corinthians, and other assemblies (vv. 8–9)?

Accepted Answer

Paul says he received material support from other assemblies—he calls it taking “wages”—so that he could “serve” the Corinthians without charging them. While he was physically present with the Corinthians, he admits he had needs, but he did not make those needs their responsibility. Instead, “the brothers” who came from Macedonia supplied what he lacked. The passage presents a cross-community network: some churches funded Paul’s work, and that funding allowed him to avoid financial dependence on Corinth during his time there.

Question 2

How does Paul describe his pattern of behavior in Corinth, and how firm is his commitment to keep it (v. 9)?

Accepted Answer

Paul describes his practice in Corinth as consistent and intentional: he “kept” himself from being burdensome to them “in everything.” The verse then states his future intention without hesitation: “I will continue to do so.” This is not a temporary tactic for a particular moment of need; he treats it as an established policy that he plans to maintain. The language suggests ongoing, watchful self-restraint rather than a one-time decision, emphasizing that avoiding Corinthian financial support was part of how he chose to conduct his ministry there.

Question 3

What does Paul mean by calling his refusal of support a “boasting,” and why does he say it cannot be stopped (v. 10)?

Accepted Answer

In this passage, “boasting” refers to Paul’s public claim that he did not take money from the Corinthians while ministering in Achaia. He roots his determination in a solemn assertion—“as the truth of Christ is in me”—to underline that he is not making an empty claim or a performative gesture. The insistence that “no one will stop me” shows he expects opposition and pressure, likely from critics who want to discredit him. His “boast” functions as a defended point of credibility in a contested environment.

Question 4

What misunderstanding does Paul anticipate in v. 11, and how does he answer it?

Accepted Answer

Paul anticipates that the Corinthians might interpret his refusal to accept their money as emotional distance or rejection—“Because I don’t love you?” He answers by denying that conclusion and appealing to God as witness: “God knows.” The structure matters: he does not simply deny the charge; he treats it as serious enough to place under God’s knowledge. Within the flow of vv. 8–12, Paul separates financial boundaries from personal care. Refusing support is presented as strategic and principled, not as lack of affection.

Question 5

According to v. 12, what is Paul’s stated purpose for continuing this practice?

Accepted Answer

Paul says he will keep doing what he has been doing “so that I may cut off occasion from them that desire an occasion.” In other words, his refusal removes an opening his opponents are looking for. The verse connects this directly to the rivals’ “boasting”: they boast in something that can be compared, and Paul wants them to be “found even as we.” The passage does not fully specify the rivals’ claims, but it clearly presents Paul’s policy as a way to prevent opponents from gaining leverage through the money question.

Question 6

How do vv. 8–12 connect Paul’s financial choices with the broader conflict in 2 Corinthians 10–13?

Accepted Answer

These verses portray money as one concrete battleground in a wider dispute over credibility and motives. Paul is defending his ministry against critics who “boast” and seek openings to undermine him. By pointing to his refusal to burden the Corinthians—while still receiving support from others—Paul tries to show that he is not exploiting them and cannot be fairly compared to rivals who may base authority on patronage or fees. The financial details are not side notes; they function as evidence in his broader argument about sincerity and integrity in ministry.
