9:6Meaning
A remembered principle—sowing sets reaping Paul introduces a saying he wants them to keep in mind: if someone “sows” with smallness or restraint, they should expect a correspondingly small “reap.” If someone sows in a large-handed way, they should expect a large-handed return. The logic is proportionality: the scale of giving is linked to the scale of results.
Unit 2 (v. 7a): Giving should be a decided, inward choice
He moves from the proverb to a direct instruction: each person is to give according to what they have already determined “in the heart.” The emphasis is personal resolve—giving that comes from a settled intention rather than from a last-minute push.
Unit 3 (v. 7b): Two wrong motives ruled out
Paul names two ways giving should not happen: not with a resentful spirit (“grudgingly”) and not because someone is forced (“under compulsion”). He is guarding against both inner reluctance and outer pressure.
Unit 4 (v. 7c): God’s stated preference for the manner of giving
He grounds the instruction with a reason: God loves the person who gives cheerfully. This highlights that the attitude of the giver matters, not only the amount given.
