Judgment on Judah declared Yahweh does not “turn” away from intense anger toward Judah. The reason given is not Josiah’s actions here but the earlier “provocation” associated with Manasseh. Yahweh then states what removal will mean: Judah will be taken “out of my sight” like Israel was, Jerusalem will be rejected despite being “chosen,” and the temple (“the house”) associated with Yahweh’s name will be cast off.
Josiah’s death and a rapid succession A standard closing note points readers to other records about Josiah. Then the scene turns geopolitical: Pharaoh-necoh marches to engage the king of Assyria near the Euphrates. Josiah goes out against Pharaoh-necoh and is killed at Megiddo when they meet. Josiah’s servants transport his body to Jerusalem for burial, and “the people of the land” select and anoint Jehoahaz to replace him.
Jehoahaz deposed; Egypt sets the terms Jehoahaz’s age, short reign (three months), and his mother’s identity are given. His reign receives a negative evaluation: he does what is evil like his predecessors. Pharaoh-necoh arrests him at Riblah to prevent him ruling in Jerusalem and imposes heavy tribute on the land. Pharaoh then installs another son of Josiah, Eliakim, renames him Jehoiakim, removes Jehoahaz to Egypt, and Jehoahaz dies there. Jehoiakim pays the demanded silver and gold by taxing the land and collecting from the people according to Pharaoh’s command.
Literary Context
This unit follows the account of Josiah’s religious actions and covenant renewal, but it immediately qualifies their impact by stating Yahweh did not turn from burning anger against Judah. That announcement bridges the reform story and the kingdom’s final unraveling. The writer then shifts to royal-summary style: a brief notice about other deeds (pointing outside the narrative), a report of Josiah’s death, and two short reign accounts. Each reign account highlights length of rule, mother’s name, evaluation (“evil”), and major political outcomes, moving Judah toward loss of independence.
Historical Context
The passage reflects a time when regional power was shifting. Assyria’s influence was waning, and Egypt was moving north to secure territory and shape outcomes in the Levant. Pharaoh-necoh’s campaign toward the Euphrates suggests competition over control of former Assyrian holdings. Judah becomes caught between larger empires: Josiah is killed at Megiddo in an encounter with Egypt, and soon afterward Egypt directly controls Judah’s kingship by arresting Jehoahaz at Riblah, imposing tribute, and installing Jehoiakim as a client ruler.
Theological Significance
This passage turns from Josiah’s reforms to a blunt claim: God’s anger toward Judah did not “turn back” (vv. 26–27). The text explicitly links that ongoing anger to Manasseh’s earlier “provocation,” not to a failure in Josiah’s efforts.

Jehoiakim summarized and evaluated Jehoiakim’s age at accession, length of reign (eleven years), and mother’s identity are listed. His reign is also evaluated as evil, again described as following the pattern of “his fathers.” The account ends without describing further events here, leaving the impression of a long reign under a negative assessment after the humiliating start under Egyptian pressure.
It also treats national catastrophe as both theological and political at the same time. God announces removal and rejection (v. 27), and then the story shows Judah losing stability and independence through real events: Josiah’s death, a three‑month king removed by Egypt, and a replacement king installed and financed by taxation (vv. 29–35). The text presents these human moves as part of the unraveling, not as random accidents.
1) How “irreversible” the announced judgment is. Some readers take vv. 26–27 as stating that Judah’s fate is now fixed: Josiah’s reforms were real but could not change the national outcome. Others think the wording is a strong summary of trajectory rather than an absolute statement that no future repentance could matter, especially since other biblical texts sometimes portray judgment as delayed, mitigated, or redirected.
2) What “remove Judah out of my sight” means. Many read this as exile language (a people driven from the land, as Israel was). Others stress that it also sounds like relational rejection language (loss of special status), with exile as the historical form that rejection takes.
3) Why Josiah confronted Pharaoh‑necoh. The passage does not explain Josiah’s motive. Some think Josiah tried to block Egypt’s move north for strategic reasons (protecting Judah or controlling a key corridor). Others think Josiah misread the situation or overreached; the narrative’s stark report of his death can be read as highlighting the limits of even a good king’s judgment.
The writer gives clear outcomes but limited explanations. The reasons for judgment (Manasseh’s provocation) are explicit, but how that interacts with Josiah’s reforms is not spelled out beyond “Yahweh didn’t turn” (2 Kings 23:26–27). Likewise, the report of Josiah’s death gives no inner motives or prophetic commentary in this unit, leaving readers to infer political and theological meaning from the sequence.
