Question 1

In v. 28, what exactly is the woman complaining about, and how does she frame her earlier interaction with Elisha?

Accepted Answer

She does not complain about the child’s death directly in v. 28; she confronts Elisha about the way the gift was given in the first place. She reminds him that she did not ask for a son and that she warned him not to “deceive” her. Her wording frames the current tragedy as tied to earlier hope: receiving a son and then losing him feels like being misled rather than simply experiencing misfortune. The verse sets an emotional and moral pressure on Elisha: the story treats her grief as sharpened by the fact that the hope came through him.

Question 2

What do Elisha’s instructions to Gehazi in v. 29 reveal about the situation and about what Elisha expects Gehazi to do?

Accepted Answer

The instructions emphasize urgency: Gehazi is to prepare quickly (“gird up your loins”) and avoid the normal social exchanges of greeting and responding on the road. Elisha also gives a specific action with a specific object—his staff—and a specific placement—on the child’s face. That shows Elisha expects Gehazi’s mission to have some real effect, not merely to deliver a message. At the same time, the text does not explain the logic behind the staff action; it only records the urgency and the precise, directed nature of the task.

Question 3

How does v. 30 change the direction of the story after Elisha sends Gehazi?

Accepted Answer

Verse 30 introduces the mother’s refusal to accept Elisha’s distance from the situation. She swears by Yahweh’s life and Elisha’s life that she will not leave him, which functions as a binding insistence that Elisha himself must come. Narratively, it prevents the staff attempt from being the final solution: even before the reader sees that Gehazi’s action fails, the mother’s words push the story toward Elisha’s personal involvement. The verse also highlights the mother’s determination and places relational pressure on Elisha, who then rises and follows her.

Question 4

What is the result of Gehazi’s actions in v. 31, and how does the text underline the failure?

Accepted Answer

Gehazi does exactly what he was told: he goes ahead and places the staff on the child’s face. The result is explicitly negative and strongly stated: there is “neither voice, nor hearing,” and the child “has not awakened.” The triple description underlines total lack of response—no sound, no sign of awareness, no change in state. Gehazi then returns and reports this failure to Elisha. The verse creates a sharp contrast that prepares for Elisha’s later actions: the staff on its own, in Gehazi’s hands, produces no observable effect.

Question 5

List the sequence of Elisha’s actions in vv. 32–35. Which actions are explicitly directed toward Yahweh, and which are directed toward the child?

Accepted Answer

Elisha arrives and sees the child dead on the bed (v. 32). He enters, shuts the door with only the child and himself present, and prays to Yahweh (v. 33)—this is the explicitly God-directed action. Then he lies on the child, aligning mouth, eyes, and hands, and stretches himself over him; the child’s flesh becomes warm (v. 34)—these are child-directed actions. Elisha then gets up, walks back and forth in the house, and repeats the stretching action; the child sneezes seven times and opens his eyes (v. 35). The narrative links prayer and persistent physical attention, without explaining the mechanism.

Question 6

How does the story portray the revival itself in v. 35, and what details are used to mark the change?

Accepted Answer

The revival is portrayed as gradual and observable rather than instantaneous. First, after Elisha stretches himself on the child, the child’s flesh becomes warm, indicating a shift from death-coldness toward life (v. 34). Then Elisha pauses and paces, and he repeats the action (v. 35), suggesting persistence through stages. The decisive markers of life come in two details: the child sneezes seven times and then opens his eyes. Sneezing presents a bodily sign of returning function, and opening the eyes indicates awareness. The text treats these as concrete signs that the child has awakened.

Question 7

In vv. 36–37, what role does Gehazi play, and how is the mother’s response described?

Accepted Answer

Gehazi functions as the intermediary who summons the mother at Elisha’s command. Elisha tells him to call her, and when she comes in, Elisha gives a simple instruction: “Take up your son.” The mother’s response is physical and deferential: she falls at Elisha’s feet and bows to the ground. Only after that does she pick up her son and leave. The text does not record spoken thanks; it conveys her gratitude and reverence through posture and action. The ending emphasizes restored relationship and restored life: she departs holding the child.
