Sudden illness and death The boy, now old enough to go out to the reapers with his father, suddenly cries out about severe head pain. The father responds practically, telling a servant to carry him back to his mother. The child sits on his mother’s knees until noon, and then the text states plainly that he dies.
The mother’s controlled, purposeful response The mother carries the child up and places him on the bed associated with the “man of God,” then shuts the door, creating a private, contained space. She asks her husband for a servant and a donkey so she can quickly go to the man of God and return. Her husband questions the urgency because it is not a special day like a new moon or Sabbath, and she answers, “It shall be well.”
