Question 1

What does the passage say about the child’s age, location, and the onset of his illness (vv. 18–19)?

Accepted Answer

The child is described as “grown,” meaning he is old enough to leave the house and be with his father at the harvest work. The illness begins suddenly “on a day” when he goes out to the reapers. His only reported symptom is intense head pain (“My head, my head”), and the father responds immediately by instructing a servant to carry him to his mother. The text gives no diagnosis or cause, keeping the focus on the rapid move from ordinary workday to emergency.

Question 2

How do the father, servant, and mother each respond, and what do those responses suggest about roles in the household (vv. 19–20)?

Accepted Answer

The father gives a practical order to a servant, indicating the household has workers who can be tasked quickly. The servant acts as a carrier and messenger, moving the child from the work site to the home. The mother becomes the primary caregiver: the child sits on her knees until noon. The passage then states plainly that he dies. These details highlight a structured household where responsibilities are distributed, yet the mother’s role becomes central when the crisis reaches the home.

Question 3

What exactly does the mother do after the child dies, and what immediate goal does her behavior show (vv. 21–22)?

Accepted Answer

After the death, she carries the child upstairs, places him on the bed associated with “the man of God,” shuts the door, and leaves. She then requests from her husband a servant and a donkey so she can “run” to the man of God and come back. Her actions show containment and urgency: she creates a private space for the child’s body and avoids extended discussion, focusing on reaching Elisha as quickly as possible.

Question 4

Why does the husband mention the new moon and Sabbath, and what does that indicate about visiting a prophet (v. 23)?

Accepted Answer

The husband’s question assumes that visiting the man of God commonly aligns with recognized religious or calendar occasions such as the new moon or Sabbath. His point is not necessarily opposition but timing: “Why will you go to him today?” That suggests consulting a prophet could be part of normal community practice on particular days. Her brief reply, “It shall be well,” does not address the calendar logic; it keeps the conversation short and preserves her urgency.

Question 5

How does the narrative use repeated short answers (“It is well”) during the journey, and what effect does this have (vv. 23–26)?

Accepted Answer

The woman answers her husband and then Gehazi with the same brief phrase, “It is well,” even though the reader knows a death has occurred. This repetition creates dramatic tension: other characters are kept in the dark while the reader watches her push toward Elisha. It also shows controlled speech under pressure. The passage does not state whether the phrase is meant as reassurance, refusal to explain, or both, but it clearly functions to prevent delay and to limit others’ involvement until she reaches Elisha.

Question 6

What does v. 27 reveal about the woman’s emotional state and the social boundaries around the prophet?

Accepted Answer

When she reaches Elisha, she grabs his feet, a physical action that signals intense appeal and refuses distance. Gehazi tries to push her away, implying a boundary around the prophet’s person and space that an attendant enforces. Elisha stops him and interprets her condition: her inner life is “vexed” (deeply distressed). The verse highlights both her desperation and Elisha’s willingness to receive the interruption, setting up an imminent request for help.

Question 7

What does Elisha mean when he says Yahweh has hidden the matter from him, and what does this contribute to the story (v. 27)?

Accepted Answer

Elisha acknowledges that he does not yet know what has happened because Yahweh has not disclosed it to him. The line presents prophetic knowledge as limited and dependent: Elisha can be the “man of God” without having automatic insight into every crisis. In the story, this also increases suspense. The reader knows the child died, but Elisha does not, so the next movement of the narrative will involve the woman bringing the hidden matter into the open.
