Question 1

What repeated pattern is established in verses 8–10, and how does it shape the rest of the story?

Accepted Answer

Verses 8–10 establish that Elisha’s stop in Shunem is not a one-time visit. The woman “constrained” him to eat, and it becomes his regular practice to turn in when passing by. That repeated contact is what makes a permanent solution reasonable: instead of improvised meals, she proposes a small, furnished upper room so his visits can include rest and privacy. The story’s later conversation about repaying her care depends on this pattern; her hospitality is sustained and intentional, not accidental.

Question 2

What does the woman mean when she says Elisha is a “holy man of God” (v. 9), based on what the passage shows?

Accepted Answer

In this scene, calling Elisha a “holy man of God” is the woman’s conclusion from observation: he “passes by … continually,” and she treats his presence as morally and spiritually trustworthy. The passage does not describe a miracle here; it presents her discernment as practical recognition of who he is and what kind of person he is. Her words function as the reason she persuades her husband to invest resources in an ongoing room. The narrative treats her assessment as sound because Elisha’s later promise comes true (v. 17).

Question 3

How does Elisha try to repay the woman, and what does his offer imply about his social position (v. 13)?

Accepted Answer

Elisha acknowledges the cost and effort of her hospitality—“all this care”—and asks what can be done for her. His concrete offer is to speak for her to the king or the commander of the army. That implies Elisha, though not a court official, has some recognized access or credibility with powerful leaders. The offer also suggests that benefits and protection in that world could come through advocacy. Importantly, the woman does not ask for such help; the initiative is Elisha’s response to being hosted.

Question 4

How should the woman’s reply, “I dwell among my own people” (v. 13), be understood from the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

In context, her reply comes immediately after Elisha offers to use elite connections. Whatever the exact nuance, it functions as a polite refusal. She signals she is not seeking special intervention beyond her community. The statement fits her portrayal as a “great” (prominent) woman: she likely has a stable place and social standing already. At minimum, the line shows she is not trying to turn hospitality into political leverage. The narrative also keeps her agency in view—she can decline even a prophet’s well-meant offer.

Question 5

Why does Gehazi’s comment in verse 14 change the direction of the story?

Accepted Answer

Until verse 14, the exchange is about how to repay hospitality, with Elisha proposing a benefit and the woman declining. Gehazi introduces a new factor: she has no son, and her husband is old. That information identifies a need that is not on the surface of the conversation and not voiced by the woman herself. It reorients Elisha from political advocacy to a family future that the couple cannot secure by influence. The story uses Gehazi as the one who supplies the missing detail that makes Elisha’s promise specific and meaningful.

Question 6

What does the woman’s response “do not lie to your handmaid” (v. 16) reveal about the promise, and how does verse 17 address it?

Accepted Answer

Her response shows the promise is emotionally charged. She does not treat it as a pleasant wish but as something that could deeply hurt if untrue. The wording suggests she fears being given false hope, especially since her situation (no son, husband old) makes the promise feel unlikely. Verse 17 directly answers that fear by narrating fulfillment at the expected time: she conceives and bears a son “as Elisha had said.” The passage’s closing line is crafted to confirm reliability, not merely surprise.
