Elisha’s refusal of payment keeps the focus on the prophet’s role as a messenger rather than a beneficiary. Historical Context
Naaman is a high-ranking official from Aram (Syria), interacting with Israel during a period when these neighboring kingdoms alternated between hostility and diplomacy. Worship was commonly tied to particular gods, places, and sanctuaries, so Naaman’s request for soil reflects a worldview in which land and worship were closely connected. As a court servant, Naaman also faces expected participation in state ceremonies connected to his master’s public duties.

2) What bowing in Rimmon’s temple amounts to. Some interpret Naaman’s bowing as unavoidable participation in idolatry, even if he personally rejects it. Others see it as a ceremonial posture required by his job (supporting the king who “leans on my hand”), not an act of inner worship.
3) What “Go in peace” signals. Some take Elisha’s short farewell as a gracious acceptance of Naaman’s situation—an indirect reassurance regarding the pardon he asked for. Others take it as a polite dismissal that does not answer the moral question; the narrative may be intentionally silent, leaving the tension in place.
The text reports Naaman’s reasoning and request in detail but gives little direct explanation. It does not spell out what Naaman believes about land and deity, and it does not explicitly describe Naaman’s internal intent when he bows in Rimmon’s temple.
