Question 1

What does Naaman’s return “with all his company” and his act of standing before Elisha communicate within the story?

Accepted Answer

The return with his whole group makes Naaman’s response public rather than private. Standing before Elisha signals respect and accountability: he comes back to the very prophet he had initially approached with expectations and status. It also frames Naaman’s confession and gift offer as an official, witnessed response to what happened. In narrative terms, the scene shifts from the private moment of washing and healing to a public acknowledgment of who healed him and what that means about God. The company’s presence underlines that the outcome cannot be reduced to a rumor or personal opinion.

Question 2

How strong is Naaman’s confession in verse 15, and what exactly does he claim?

Accepted Answer

Naaman’s confession is sweeping: he says he now knows there is no God anywhere on earth except in Israel. That is more than gratitude for a successful cure; it is a claim about reality and about Israel’s God in particular. The text does not describe him as joining Israel formally or learning Israel’s full law, but it does present his speech as a genuine recognition of Israel’s God as uniquely God. His words also set the stage for later requests (soil, sacrifices), which are attempts to align his future worship with the confession he has just made.

Question 3

What does the passage itself suggest about whether Naaman’s “present” is payment or gratitude?

Accepted Answer

The passage leaves room for both motives, but it pushes the reader toward seeing the gift as gratitude offered after the healing. Naaman calls himself Elisha’s “servant” and says “please take a present,” which reads like honor and thanks rather than a fee negotiated beforehand. At the same time, the larger setting makes gifts to holy men a normal way to recognize power and secure favor, so it can still carry the feel of repayment. Elisha’s repeated refusal, anchored in his service to Yahweh, blocks any interpretation that the healing was for sale.

Question 4

Why does Elisha refuse the gift, and how does his oath-like language shape the meaning?

Accepted Answer

Elisha refuses in a way that ties his decision to Yahweh: “As Yahweh lives, before whom I stand, I will receive none.” The point is not that gifts are always wrong, but that in this moment Elisha will not let Naaman’s healing be turned into a transaction that benefits the prophet. His language emphasizes identity and loyalty (“before whom I stand”), presenting Elisha as a servant and representative of Yahweh rather than a spiritual specialist who profits from access to divine power. Naaman’s urging and Elisha’s continued refusal highlight the firmness of that stance.

Question 5

What does Naaman’s request for two mule-loads of earth reveal about his understanding of worship?

Accepted Answer

Naaman links his future sacrifices to physical earth from Israel, implying that land and worship are connected in his thinking. In his world, gods were often associated with particular territories and sanctuaries, so taking soil could be his way of honoring Yahweh properly while living elsewhere. The passage does not confirm his theology of land as correct, but it does show his intent: he wants to worship Yahweh in a tangible, concrete way after returning home. The request also follows Elisha’s refusal of the gift, so Naaman seeks another way to express devotion and continuity with Israel.

Question 6

In verses 17–18, how does Naaman hold together his exclusive worship pledge and his expected presence in Rimmon’s temple?

Accepted Answer

Naaman makes an explicit pledge: he will offer sacrifices to no other gods, only to Yahweh. Yet he anticipates a court duty that puts him in Rimmon’s temple when his master worships and physically relies on him (“leans on my hand”). Naaman expects he will have to bow there, and he asks that Yahweh pardon him “in this thing.” The tension is part of the text’s realism: a new allegiance to Yahweh does not remove Naaman from his political role. The passage does not narrate how it plays out later; it records the dilemma and the request for pardon.

Question 7

What can and cannot be concluded from Elisha’s brief reply, “Go in peace”?

Accepted Answer

It can be concluded that Elisha sends Naaman away without confrontation and that the encounter ends on peaceful terms. The narrative does not show Elisha demanding further proof, giving detailed instructions, or rejecting Naaman’s pledge. However, it cannot be concluded with certainty that Elisha explicitly approves every detail of Naaman’s plan, because Elisha does not directly answer the soil request’s assumptions or the Rimmon-temple dilemma. “Go in peace” can function as reassurance, but it can also function as a courteous dismissal that leaves unresolved questions hanging. The text itself keeps the reply short and the implications open.
