Question 1

What reasons does Gehazi give for pursuing Naaman, and how do those reasons portray Elisha’s earlier refusal?

Accepted Answer

Gehazi interprets Elisha’s refusal as a kind of “sparing” of Naaman and treats it as a poor decision: Elisha did not accept what Naaman brought. On that basis, Gehazi decides to run after Naaman and take “somewhat.” The passage does not say Gehazi is acting under orders; it presents this as his own evaluation of the situation and his own plan. His reasoning sets Elisha’s choice (refusing gifts) and Gehazi’s choice (pursuing gifts) in direct contrast, framing the refusal not as principled restraint but as a missed opportunity—at least in Gehazi’s eyes.

Question 2

How does the narrator show that Gehazi’s plan is personal rather than an authorized mission from Elisha?

Accepted Answer

The passage signals personal initiative in several ways. Gehazi speaks privately about “my master” and then swears an oath “as Yahweh lives” about what he will do: run after Naaman and take something. Nothing indicates he consulted Elisha. When he reaches Naaman, he claims “my master has sent me,” but that is presented after the earlier description of Gehazi’s independent decision, making the claim look like part of the scheme rather than a true commission. The sequence—private resolve, pursuit, then a new public story—marks the mission as self-generated.

Question 3

What does Naaman’s response in verses 21 and 23 reveal about his posture toward Gehazi’s request?

Accepted Answer

Naaman reacts to Gehazi’s running as a sign of urgency and treats it respectfully: he gets down from his chariot and asks whether everything is well. That suggests he assumes important news or trouble. When Gehazi presents the request, Naaman responds with eagerness to give. He even increases the amount from one talent to two and organizes delivery with his servants carrying the items. The narrator does not portray Naaman as suspicious or resistant; he appears generous and ready to help, which makes Gehazi’s deception easier and underscores the imbalance between Naaman’s openness and Gehazi’s manipulation.

Question 4

List the elements of Gehazi’s fabricated message (v. 22). What details make it sound plausible within the story world?

Accepted Answer

Gehazi says: (1) “All is well,” (2) “my master has sent me,” (3) two young men have just arrived, (4) they are connected to “the sons of the prophets,” (5) they came from the hill-country of Ephraim, and (6) they need a talent of silver and two changes of clothing. Several details sound plausible: an urgent last-minute arrival (“even now”), a recognized group (“sons of the prophets”), and a specific location (Ephraim). The request combines money and clothing, both meaningful forms of support. The specificity can function as credibility—whether or not it is true.

Question 5

How do the amounts and items requested and given shape the reader’s sense of the event?

Accepted Answer

Gehazi asks for one talent of silver and two changes of clothing, which already represents significant wealth in the narrative setting. Naaman then presses him to accept more—two talents—and adds logistical support by assigning servants to carry the goods. This escalation highlights both Naaman’s generosity and the scale of what Gehazi gains through deception. It also increases the narrative tension: the more valuable and visible the gift, the more complicated it becomes to conceal and the more serious Gehazi’s act appears. The text draws attention to quantity (“two talents”) and the accompanying carriers, making the transaction feel weighty rather than incidental.

Question 6

What actions in verse 24 emphasize concealment, and why do they matter for interpreting Gehazi’s motives?

Accepted Answer

Verse 24 focuses on a controlled transfer and removal of witnesses. Gehazi reaches “the hill,” takes the items from the servants’ hands, stores them in the house, and then sends the men away. The effect is to cut off outside involvement at the moment the goods enter private storage. The passage does not explicitly state what Gehazi planned to do later, but it highlights secrecy rather than distribution. Because the narrator chooses to mention storage and dismissal, many readers infer that Gehazi’s story about helping others was a cover. At minimum, the text portrays a deliberate attempt to keep the gift out of view.
