vv. 23–25: Invitation and royal refusal
After two years Absalom holds a sheep-shearing feast at Baal-hazor and invites all the king’s sons. He also invites David; David refuses, citing the burden of a large royal party, yet sends Absalom away with a blessing.
vv. 26–27: Focus on Amnon
With David absent, Absalom presses for Amnon’s attendance. David questions the request but eventually allows Amnon and the other princes to go.
v. 28: Instructions to servants
Absalom tells his servants to watch for the moment when Amnon is “merry with wine,” then, at Absalom’s signal, to strike and kill him. He counters anticipated fear by invoking his command and urging decisiveness.
v. 29: Assassination and flight
The servants carry out the order and kill Amnon. The other king’s sons rise in panic, mount their mules, and flee, suggesting they fear wider violence or retaliation.
