The crowd reinterprets the miracle as a divine visit After seeing what Paul has done, the people shout in their own Lycaonian language that “the gods” have come down looking like humans. They assign divine names: Barnabas is identified with Zeus, while Paul is identified with Hermes because Paul is the main speaker. The local priest of Zeus joins in, bringing animals and decorative garlands to the city gates, intending a public sacrifice with the crowd.
