Night clues and depth measurements As the fourteenth night arrives, the ship is being driven back and forth in the sea. Around midnight, the sailors suspect land is nearby. They verify this by taking depth measurements and discover the water is getting shallower, first twenty fathoms, then fifteen.
Emergency anchoring and waiting for daylight The quick change in depth raises fear of being dashed onto rocky ground. To avoid drifting onto hazards in the dark, they drop four anchors from the stern. Their immediate goal is simply to hold position until daylight makes the next move clearer.
A secret escape attempt is blocked Some sailors try to flee in the ship’s boat. They disguise the plan by acting as if they are placing anchors from the front, but their real intent is to get away. Paul tells the centurion and soldiers that if these sailors do not remain, “you can’t be saved,” meaning the others will not survive the shipwreck without the crew. The soldiers respond decisively by cutting the boat’s ropes so it drifts away, removing the option of escape and forcing everyone to stay together.
Literary Context
This unit sits in the middle of the long shipwreck narrative (Acts 27–28), where the story follows Paul’s escorted journey to Rome. Just before this, Paul has urged courage by reporting an assurance that all lives will be spared though the ship will be lost (earlier in Acts 27).
