Question 1

How do verses 44–45 describe the origin and purpose of “the tent of the testimony”?

Accepted Answer

Stephen emphasizes two features. First, the tent’s origin is not human invention: God “appointed” that it be made, and Moses followed a “pattern” he had been shown (v. 44). Second, its purpose is tied to Israel’s wilderness life—portable worship linked to God’s guidance rather than a fixed national center. In v. 45 the same tent continues into the next era: Israel’s ancestors bring it into the land under Joshua. The passage’s basic point is continuity: Israel’s worship space began as something God directed and was carried along with the people.

Question 2

What role does Joshua play in Stephen’s summary, and what does it add to his argument?

Accepted Answer

Joshua appears as the leader under whom the ancestors “brought in” the tent when they entered the land (v. 45). Stephen also adds that God “drove out” the nations before Israel during this settlement. This ties Israel’s worship life to God’s actions in history: the worship space moves with God’s people as God gives them territory. The argument being built is that God’s presence and guidance were not bound to one permanent site from the start; they were experienced in movement, transition, and conquest, with God acting beyond any single location.

Question 3

How do verses 46–47 distinguish David’s desire from Solomon’s action?

Accepted Answer

Stephen says David “found favor” with God and asked to find a “habitation” (a dwelling) for “the God of Jacob” (v. 46). But Stephen then pivots: “But Solomon built him a house” (v. 47). The contrast highlights that David’s role is desire and request, while Solomon’s role is construction. In the flow of the speech, this preserves the temple’s historical legitimacy (it arises from the David–Solomon storyline) while setting up Stephen’s next clarification that a built “house” cannot be equated with God’s true dwelling.

Question 4

What does the word “However” in verse 48 signal within this paragraph?

Accepted Answer

“However” marks a limitation or correction applied to what has just been said about Solomon building a house (vv. 46–47). Stephen is not denying that a house was built; he is qualifying what that house can mean. Verse 48 states the corrective: “the Most High doesn’t dwell in temples made with hands.” So the paragraph moves from describing legitimate historical developments (tent → desire → temple) to stating that none of these developments implies God can be contained. The “however” indicates that the temple story must be interpreted in light of God’s transcendence.

Question 5

In the prophetic quotation (vv. 49–50), what is meant by “heaven is my throne” and “earth the footstool of my feet”?

Accepted Answer

These images underline God’s rule and scope. A throne represents authority and reign; a footstool suggests that even what humans consider vast and stable (the earth) is still under God’s sovereignty. In context, the point is not to map God’s body onto the universe, but to stress that the entire created order is already God’s domain. Therefore, a human-built “house” cannot be the place that contains God or supplies him with a resting place. The quotation supports Stephen’s claim in v. 48 by appealing to God’s cosmic kingship.

Question 6

What is the force of the questions: “What kind of house will you build me?” and “What is the place of my rest?” (v. 49)?

Accepted Answer

The questions are rhetorical: they are meant to challenge assumptions that a building can serve as God’s full dwelling or meet a need in God. The wording implies a mismatch between God’s greatness and human attempts to define his presence through construction. “Rest” here points to a settled place where someone resides; the question implies that no human-made site can function as God’s ultimate residence. In Stephen’s argument, these questions do not erase the history of the tent and temple, but they prevent that history from being interpreted as God being locatable or controllable.

Question 7

How does verse 50 (“Didn’t my hand make all these things?”) support Stephen’s main point?

Accepted Answer

Verse 50 grounds the whole claim in creation. If God’s “hand” made “all these things,” then everything humans use to build—materials, land, sky, the whole world—already belongs to God and depends on him. That makes it incoherent to think a building could contain the Creator, or that God’s presence could be reduced to what humans construct. It also reframes “made with hands” (v. 48): human making is limited and derivative, while God’s making is comprehensive. The Creator/creature distinction is the logic behind the temple qualification.
