Question 1

What shift happens in Stephen’s speech at Acts 7:51 compared with the earlier part of Acts 7?

Accepted Answer

Acts 7:51 marks a pivot from retelling Israel’s history to directly addressing the present audience. Earlier, Stephen narrates events and patterns; here he names his hearers with confrontational terms (“stiff-necked,” “uncircumcised in heart and ears”) and then applies the pattern to them: “As your fathers did, so you do.” The passage functions like the conclusion of his argument, turning historical examples into a present indictment. The shift signals that the history was not merely informational—it was building toward a verdict about their current posture toward God’s message.

Question 2

In what ways does Stephen describe the audience’s resistance, and how does he connect it to the Holy Spirit?

Accepted Answer

Stephen describes resistance as stubbornness (“stiff-necked”) and inward closure (“uncircumcised in heart and ears”), focusing on refusal to listen and respond. He then states the core charge: “you always resist the Holy Spirit.” In the flow of the speech, this means their opposition is not merely against a human speaker but against God’s active guidance. The “always” language portrays a settled habit or repeated pattern. He also links their resistance to earlier generations, implying that the same kind of resistance to God’s direction has recurred across time.

Question 3

How does verse 52 use the prophets to support Stephen’s accusation, and what is the role of the rhetorical question?

Accepted Answer

Verse 52 appeals to the prophets as a test case for Israel’s historical response to God’s messengers. The rhetorical question (“Which of the prophets didn’t your fathers persecute?”) is structured to expect the answer “none,” emphasizing the breadth of past opposition. Stephen then intensifies the point by claiming that earlier generations not only persecuted prophets but killed those who foretold the coming of the “Righteous One.” The question functions less as a request for data and more as a sweeping summary meant to show continuity between past hostility and present hostility.

Question 4

Who is “the Righteous One” in this passage, and how does Stephen relate him to the audience?

Accepted Answer

In context, “the Righteous One” is presented as a person whose coming was announced ahead of time by earlier messengers and then was met with betrayal and murder in Stephen’s present. Within Acts’ wider narrative, this title points to Jesus. Stephen’s logic is: the ancestors killed those who foretold this figure, and “you” have now become the betrayers and murderers of him. The title highlights innocence and moral rightness, which sharpens the accusation: the community’s leaders have treated the truly righteous person as an enemy.

Question 5

What does Stephen mean by saying the audience “received the law as it was ordained by angels,” and why does he add that they “didn’t keep it”?

Accepted Answer

Stephen’s statement about receiving the law “through angels” portrays the law as a divine gift delivered with special weight and authority. The precise mechanics are not explained here; the key point is that their reception of the law was a privileged event, not a casual human tradition. He then uses that privilege to heighten the charge: despite receiving it, they “didn’t keep it.” In other words, they claim attachment to the law and its institutions, but their failure to obey undermines that claim—supporting his broader argument that sacred possession does not equal faithful response.

Question 6

How does the repeated reference to “fathers” function in Stephen’s argument in verses 51–52?

Accepted Answer

“Fathers” connects Stephen’s present audience to prior generations, not merely as family history but as a moral and spiritual pattern. By saying, “As your fathers did, so you do,” he frames the current conflict as the latest instance of a long-running refusal to accept God’s messengers. This is not just ancestry talk; it is an argument about continuity of behavior. It also sets up the escalation: earlier generations persecuted prophets and killed forerunners, and now the present generation has betrayed and murdered the promised “Righteous One.”

Question 7

What are the main accusations Stephen makes in this unit, and how do they build from v. 51 to v. 53?

Accepted Answer

The accusations progress in intensity and scope. In v. 51, Stephen charges inward stubbornness, unwillingness to hear, and ongoing resistance to the Holy Spirit, matching the behavior of their ancestors. In v. 52, he connects them to a history of persecuting prophets and killing those who predicted the coming “Righteous One,” then directly accuses his hearers of becoming betrayers and murderers of that person. In v. 53, he adds a final charge: even though they received the law with strong divine authorization (“ordained by angels”), they failed to keep it. The build moves from attitude, to historical pattern, to specific culpability, to covenant accountability.
