Question 1

What immediate emotional and physical responses are described from Stephen’s hearers in vv.54–57?

Accepted Answer

The passage piles up reactions that communicate escalating hostility. In v.54 they are “cut to the heart” and “gnash” their teeth, language that paints anger as both inward (pierced) and outward (animal-like aggression). In v.57 the group becomes louder and more coordinated: they cry out with a loud voice, stop their ears, and rush together “with one accord.” The actions suggest they refuse to listen further and are moving from emotional outrage to physical action. The narrative focus stays on the crowd’s shared movement rather than on individual leaders issuing formal directions.

Question 2

How does Luke contrast Stephen’s posture and perception with the crowd’s behavior in vv.54–56?

Accepted Answer

Luke sets up a “two-level” scene. On earth, Stephen is surrounded by opponents who are furious and loud. At the same time, Stephen is described as “full of the Holy Spirit,” looking steadily into heaven rather than reacting in kind. What he perceives is also contrasted with what they do: he sees “the glory of God” and Jesus at God’s right hand, then he says out loud that he sees “the heavens opened” and “the Son of Man standing.” The contrast highlights Stephen’s calm, God-directed focus alongside the crowd’s escalating refusal and aggression.

Question 3

What exactly does Stephen claim to see and say in vv.55–56, and why might that matter in this setting?

Accepted Answer

Stephen claims three related things: he sees “the glory of God,” he sees Jesus “standing at the right hand of God,” and he interprets the moment by announcing “the heavens opened” and “the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” In this setting—Stephen speaking to the council after accusing them of resisting God—his statement is not private comfort but public testimony. It implies that Jesus is alive, honored beside God, and that Stephen’s message has heavenly backing. The phrase “Son of Man” also echoes a title associated with authority, which could intensify the perceived offense.

Question 4

What sequence of actions leads from Stephen’s vision report to his death in vv.57–58?

Accepted Answer

After Stephen speaks, the group reacts with a coordinated shutdown: they shout loudly and block their ears, signaling rejection of his words. Then they rush him together, throw him out of the city, and stone him. Luke narrates it as rapid escalation rather than deliberation. One detail adds structure to the violence: “the witnesses” set their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul, implying they are preparing for physical involvement and marking Saul as a connected observer. The movement from silencing to seizure to execution happens in a tight chain.

Question 5

What do Stephen’s two final prayers in vv.59–60 reveal about who he addresses and what he asks?

Accepted Answer

Stephen’s final words are two distinct requests. First, while being stoned he calls on “the Lord” and specifically says, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” That shows he directs a death-prayer to Jesus and entrusts his life to him at the moment of dying. Second, he kneels and cries out, “Lord, don’t hold this sin against them,” asking mercy for the people killing him. The text does not present these as general reflections but as immediate speech under violence. Together they frame his death as worshipful trust and intercession rather than retaliation.

Question 6

How does the brief note about the “witnesses” and Saul function in the narrative (v.58)?

Accepted Answer

The mention of “witnesses” connects the stoning to an accusatory process: those who testified are publicly involved, laying down garments to act. At the same time, the detail that they place garments “at the feet of a young man named Saul” introduces Saul as personally present and linked to the event. The text does not explain Saul’s motives or level of authority here, but it does place him at a focal point—literally receiving the garments—suggesting he is more than a random bystander. This prepares for Saul’s later prominence in Acts while keeping this scene’s focus on Stephen.

Question 7

What does Luke mean by saying Stephen “fell asleep” (v.60) in this context?

Accepted Answer

In context, “fell asleep” is Luke’s way of reporting Stephen’s death after his final cry. It functions as a narrative description rather than a medical statement about unconsciousness. The wording keeps attention on Stephen’s last prayers and the manner of his dying rather than on gruesome details of execution. It also fits common biblical language where death can be described with sleep-like imagery, highlighting the temporary nature of death from the narrator’s perspective without denying that Stephen truly dies. The passage still makes clear the cause: he is being stoned.
