Question 1

How does verse 1 frame the speaker’s role before any future prediction is given?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 presents the speaker as more than a messenger of information. He claims prior involvement in political events: “in the first year of Darius the Mede” he “stood up to confirm and strengthen him.” That implies continuity between earlier imperial transition and the new disclosure that follows. It also sets a tone that unseen activity is connected to the rise and stability of rulers. The verse does not explain the method, but it establishes the speaker’s authority and experience before he says, “Now will I show you the truth.”

Question 2

What does the passage explicitly say will happen in Persia before Greece becomes central?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 gives a short chain of events within Persia: after the current reference point, “yet three kings” will arise, and then “the fourth” will be far richer than the others. The wealth is not presented as a detail for its own sake; it becomes a source of strength (“grown strong through his riches”). Only then does the focus widen outward: this wealthy ruler “shall stir up all against the realm of Greece.” The text stays at the level of succession, wealth, and mobilization rather than narrating battles or naming individuals.

Question 3

What are the key features of the “fourth” Persian king as described, and what is left unspecified?

Accepted Answer

The “fourth” Persian king is defined by comparative wealth (“far richer than they all”) and by the political consequences of that wealth: he becomes strong through riches and then provokes broad action against Greece (“stir up all”). The passage does not specify whether “all” means the entire empire, a large army levy, or a wide coalition; it only stresses the scope of mobilization. It also does not describe the outcome of the provocation here—only that this Persian stage sets up the next stage, where a Greek ruler rises.

Question 4

How does verse 3 portray the “mighty king,” and what kind of rule is emphasized?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 portrays the coming ruler as singularly powerful: “A mighty king shall stand up, who shall rule with great dominion, and do according to his will.” The emphasis is on personal dominance and freedom of action—his decisions are described as driven by his own will rather than checked by equals. The text gives no name, location, or administrative details, but it signals a peak of centralized authority. In the flow of the paragraph, this ruler follows the Persian provocation against Greece, making him a Greek-world counterpart who rises to dominate.

Question 5

What does verse 4 say will happen to the mighty king’s kingdom, and what contrasts are highlighted?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 stresses sudden reversal: “When he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken.” Instead of continuity, there is fragmentation “toward the four winds of the sky,” meaning a multi-direction spread. Two contrasts are explicit: it will not go “to his posterity” (not inherited by his descendants), and it will not match the scale of his former dominion. Finally, the kingdom is “plucked up” and given “for others besides these,” suggesting that even beyond the main divisions, additional parties gain control. The picture is loss, redistribution, and reduced unity.

Question 6

How do the repeated words “stand up,” “king,” and “kingdom” shape the passage’s message?

Accepted Answer

The repetition of “stand up” marks transitions: rulers rise (v.2–3) and then, almost as quickly, the mighty king’s kingdom is broken after he has “stood up” (v.4). The recurring focus on “king” and “kingdom” keeps attention on political authority—who holds it, how they exercise it (“rule… according to his will”), and how it transfers. The effect is to show a pattern: leadership appears solid while it is rising, but the narrative momentum moves toward succession, conflict, and division rather than stable dynastic continuity.

Question 7

What relationship does the passage draw between wealth, power, and international conflict?

Accepted Answer

In verse 2, wealth is not merely economic description; it is portrayed as a catalyst for geopolitical action. The fourth Persian king becomes “strong through his riches,” and that strength leads him to “stir up all against the realm of Greece.” The passage thus connects resources to capacity for large-scale mobilization and escalation. At the same time, verses 3–4 show that even extreme power can be short-lived: the mighty king rules with great dominion, but his kingdom is then broken and divided. Together, the verses link wealth and conquest to instability and rapid change.
