Question 1

What problem in the scene prompts the queen to enter the banquet hall (v. 10), and what does her entrance change in the story?

Accepted Answer

The queen enters “because of the words of the king and his lords,” meaning the distress in the hall has become loud and public. Her entrance changes the direction of the episode: the court experts have already failed to read or explain the writing, and the king is visibly shaken. The queen does not interpret the message herself; instead she stabilizes the king emotionally and supplies missing information about someone the current court has not brought forward—Daniel. In the narrative flow, her speech bridges the failed counselors and Daniel’s appearance.

Question 2

In v. 10, what does the queen say to the king, and what tone does she set for the conversation?

Accepted Answer

She begins with the formal court wish, “O king, live forever,” then tells him not to let his thoughts overwhelm him or his face change with fear. The tone is calm, corrective, and confident. She speaks as someone with access and authority to address the king directly in front of his officials. Her words also imply that the king’s visible panic is part of the crisis; she treats composure as necessary before the problem can be handled. This sets the stage for an ordered solution rather than continued confusion.

Question 3

List the descriptions the queen gives of Daniel in vv. 11–12. What do these descriptions emphasize?

Accepted Answer

She says Daniel has “the spirit of the holy gods,” and that in earlier days “light and understanding and wisdom” were found in him—wisdom likened to that of the gods. She also says Nebuchadnezzar appointed him master over magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. In v. 12 she adds an “excellent spirit,” plus knowledge and understanding, and highlights specific competencies: interpreting dreams, explaining dark sayings, and dissolving doubts. The emphasis is on proven insight, reputation, and demonstrated skill, not merely a claim of talent.

Question 4

What evidence does the queen use from the past to support her recommendation (vv. 11–12)?

Accepted Answer

Her recommendation is grounded in historical precedent, not a hunch. She points to “the days of your father,” when Daniel’s unusual insight was already recognized. She cites a concrete action by Nebuchadnezzar: he “made him master” over the various expert groups. She then restates why that promotion made sense—Daniel repeatedly showed exceptional abilities in interpreting and explaining difficult matters. By stacking description, past performance, and official appointment, she frames Daniel as a tested advisor with a record that the current crisis should take seriously.

Question 5

What does the passage say (and not say) about the phrase “spirit of the holy gods” (v. 11)?

Accepted Answer

The passage explicitly says this is the queen’s description of Daniel: she claims that such a spirit is “in him.” It does not directly explain the phrase or translate it into Israel’s theological vocabulary. Because the words come from a Babylonian court setting, the phrase may reflect how royal officials talked about divine or supernatural insight. The key narrative point is clear even without resolving the phrase: Daniel’s insight is presented as extraordinary and connected to a realm beyond normal human ability, which is why she expects he can explain the writing.

Question 6

Why does v. 12 mention both names, “Daniel” and “Belteshazzar,” and what role does that play in the scene?

Accepted Answer

The queen identifies him as “the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar.” Mentioning both names links Daniel’s personal identity with the official court identity assigned to him. In this scene, that matters because the king and his officials may recognize the Babylonian name more readily, while the narrative and the queen preserve his Hebrew name. It also reinforces that Daniel’s status in the empire was not informal; he had been integrated into court life and previously received a royal name, making him a legitimate candidate to be summoned.

Question 7

What outcome does the queen confidently predict if Daniel is called (v. 12), and how does that function in the narrative?

Accepted Answer

She predicts, “he will show the interpretation.” This is not yet the interpretation itself; it is a statement of expected competence. Narratively, her confidence raises anticipation and contrast: the king’s summoned experts have failed, but Daniel is introduced as the one person likely to succeed. Her speech also frames Daniel’s forthcoming role as explanatory—making the troubling message understandable—rather than magical control over events. The prediction guides the reader to expect that the crisis will be resolved through Daniel’s insight, setting up the next part of the story.
