Daniel is presented and identified Daniel is brought in before the king. Belshazzar addresses him with questions that locate Daniel socially and politically: he is “that Daniel,” one of the Judeans taken in the exile, brought from Judah by the earlier king connected to the deportations.

He then turns to Daniel: if Daniel can read the writing and make known its interpretation and resolve the uncertainty, Daniel will receive royal honors—purple clothing, a gold chain, and the status of “third ruler” in the kingdom.
Literary Context
This scene sits in the middle of the banquet crisis, after the writing appears and the king’s fear escalates. Earlier, Belshazzar summons his normal roster of experts, but they cannot read or explain the message, creating the narrative need for an outside figure. Daniel’s entrance continues a recurring Daniel pattern: royal power is anxious, official wisdom fails, and the captive Judean is called in as the one who can interpret what others cannot. The king’s questions and promises also set up Daniel’s coming speech and the message’s interpretation, which will address the king directly.
Historical Context
The setting is the Neo-Babylonian court in its later period, with a Judean exile serving (or formerly serving) in imperial administration. The king’s reference to “my father” points back to Nebuchadnezzar as the earlier ruler connected with Judah’s deportations, and it recalls a remembered past of conquest and resettlement. Court culture regularly used public rewards—colored garments, gold ornaments, and official rank—to display royal favor and to bind skilled advisers to the throne. The scene assumes a multicultural religious environment, reflected in the king’s language about divine “spirit” and Daniel’s reputation.

Daniel is summoned because the normal court experts cannot deal with the wall writing (vv. 15–16). The king frames Daniel’s identity socially and politically: a Judean exile connected to the earlier deportations (v. 13). Belshazzar also frames Daniel’s reputation as something beyond ordinary skill—he has heard that “the spirit of the gods” is in Daniel and that he has unusual insight (v. 14).
Belshazzar offers public rewards (purple clothing, a gold chain, and high rank) if Daniel can read and explain the writing (v. 16). Daniel refuses the gifts and rewards, yet agrees to read and give the interpretation anyway (v. 17). The text’s key contrast is that Daniel will deliver the message while distancing himself from payment.
Some think Daniel’s refusal is mainly moral integrity: he will not appear “bought,” and he will speak freely to the king. Others think the refusal is also strategic and symbolic: he keeps distance because the kingdom is already under judgment, so the honors being offered are empty or soon-to-end.
Another smaller difference is how to take the king’s phrase “spirit of the gods” (v. 14). Some read it as Belshazzar’s polytheistic viewpoint or court language, without implying Daniel shares it. Others argue the story expects readers to hear it as a confused way of describing the one true God’s empowering presence, filtered through a Babylonian mouth.
The text states Daniel’s refusal and his willingness to interpret (v. 17) but does not explicitly explain his motive. Readers infer motive from the wider scene (a fearful king, failed experts, a looming verdict) and from Daniel’s later speech in the chapter. Similarly, the king’s phrasing about divine “spirit” reports what he has heard and how he talks; the narrator does not pause here to clarify it.
Explicitly, the passage shows that true interpretation of the writing does not come from the empire’s regular wisdom system (vv. 15–16) and that Daniel’s role is not controlled by royal patronage (v. 17). By refusing rewards while still interpreting, Daniel separates the message’s meaning from personal gain and underscores that the king is receiving an interpretation he cannot purchase.
