Question 1

What details does Belshazzar use to identify Daniel in verse 13, and what do those details suggest about Daniel’s place in the court?

Accepted Answer

Belshazzar identifies Daniel by name and by origin: he is “of the children of the captivity of Judah,” connected to the deportation from Judah carried out by the earlier king Belshazzar calls “my father” (v. 13). These details locate Daniel as an exile, not a native Babylonian court insider. Even though Daniel is brought into the royal presence, the king’s framing emphasizes Daniel’s outsider status and the imperial power that relocated him. The identification also ties the present crisis to Babylon’s earlier conquest history, reminding the reader that Daniel’s presence in Babylon results from political upheaval and forced displacement.

Question 2

How does Belshazzar describe Daniel’s reputation in verse 14, and what kind of ability is emphasized?

Accepted Answer

Belshazzar reports what he has “heard” about Daniel: that “the spirit of the gods” is in him and that “light and understanding and excellent wisdom” are found in him (v. 14). The emphasis is not on training credentials, but on extraordinary insight. The description combines spiritual language (“spirit”) with intellectual language (light, understanding, wisdom), presenting Daniel’s ability as something that produces clear perception in situations where others are stuck. Importantly, this is the king’s characterization and reflects court talk about unusual skill. It sets up why Daniel, not the official experts, is now being asked to solve the problem.

Question 3

What failure does the king report in verse 15, and how does that failure set the stage for Daniel’s role?

Accepted Answer

The king says the “wise men” and “enchanters” were brought in to read the writing and make known its interpretation, but they could not show the interpretation (v. 15). This failure establishes the crisis: the message is inaccessible through the empire’s usual channels of wisdom. It also creates the narrative need for Daniel as an alternative source of insight. By stating the experts’ inability immediately before turning to Daniel, the passage highlights a contrast between official court resources and the kind of understanding Daniel is believed to have. Daniel’s role is framed as uniquely capable of resolving what the king calls a perplexing problem.

Question 4

What exactly does Belshazzar promise Daniel in verse 16, and what does that reveal about how the court uses rewards?

Accepted Answer

Belshazzar promises Daniel three rewards if he can read the writing and explain its interpretation: he will be clothed with purple, receive a gold chain, and be made “third ruler in the kingdom” (v. 16). The purple and gold function as visible honor and public endorsement, while the rank offers political authority. Together, these show that the court uses rewards both to display royal favor and to secure service—tying an interpreter’s success to status and advancement. The king’s offer also suggests urgency: he tries to motivate Daniel with immediate, concrete benefits, as if the meaning of the writing can be obtained through generous payment.

Question 5

In verse 17, what two-part response does Daniel give to the king’s offer, and what tension does it create in the scene?

Accepted Answer

Daniel first rejects the offer: the king should keep his gifts and give the rewards to someone else (v. 17). Second, he still agrees to do the requested task: he will read the writing and make its interpretation known. This creates a tension between royal power and prophetic clarity. The king assumes interpretation can be purchased and rewarded, but Daniel separates the interpretation from personal gain. The refusal also signals that Daniel’s message will not be shaped by the king’s patronage. At the same time, Daniel’s willingness to proceed shows he is not withholding insight out of spite; he will speak, but not for pay.

Question 6

How do verses 13–17 portray the relationship between political authority and access to “interpretation”?

Accepted Answer

Belshazzar has political authority: he summons people, questions Daniel, and offers promotions (vv. 13, 16). Yet he lacks access to the meaning of the writing and cannot get it through his official experts (v. 15). The passage portrays interpretation as something the king needs but does not control. Daniel’s refusal of gifts reinforces that point: the king’s ability to reward does not translate into power over the message or its source (v. 17). So the scene places royal authority and interpretive authority side by side, but it does not merge them. The king can command attendance, but he cannot manufacture understanding.
