Daniel’s vision pauses the beasts’ rampage and shifts to a higher court. The point is not mainly the beasts’ strength but that their power is answerable to a final authority. Multiple thrones appear, then the “Ancient of Days” takes the central seat. His whiteness and the fire-filled throne present moral purity and overwhelming power, not just grandeur.

The court is crowded: countless attendants serve, and huge numbers stand before him. Then the scene becomes formal: a judgment session begins, and “the books” are opened. The horn’s loud speech remains in view, and the verdict follows—one beast is killed and burned, while the others lose ruling authority but continue existing for a limited span.

Where interpretation differs (only where needed)

Who sits on the other thrones. Some read the extra thrones as seats for other heavenly judges who participate in the ruling. Others read them as seats for court officials or attendants who support the main judge.

What “the books” are. Some take them as records of deeds that justify the verdict. Others take them more broadly as the court’s official records—documents that authorize decisions, not necessarily a detailed moral ledger.

What it means that the other beasts keep living “for a season and a time.” Some understand this as the political continuation of earlier empires in some form (changed, absorbed, or limited). Others see it as the lingering presence or effects of beast-like power after its right to rule is removed.

Why the disagreement exists The vision gives vivid images but not many specifics. “Thrones,” “books,” and the limited extension of life are clear as courtroom elements, yet the text does not spell out who occupies every seat, what exactly is written, or how the beasts “continue” after losing dominion. The images can fit more than one coherent scenario.

What this passage clearly contributes This scene provides the vision’s turning point: oppressive rule is evaluated and ended by a higher court. The horn’s boasting is not harmless speech; it is part of what brings the beast to judgment (v. 11). The opening of “the books” signals that the verdict is deliberate and accountable, not impulsive (v. 10). The differing outcomes (one beast destroyed; others stripped and limited) show that divine judgment can be both decisive and measured, ending authority immediately while still placing strict limits on what remains (vv. 11–12).
