Question 1

What actions does Daniel say he is doing in verse 20, and what do they show about the focus of his prayer?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 stacks several actions: Daniel is speaking, praying, confessing his sin and the sin of Israel, and presenting a supplication to Yahweh. The focus is not only personal guilt but shared, national wrongdoing. He also specifies the target of his request: it is “for the holy mountain,” tying his prayer to Jerusalem and its sacred significance. The wording shows a prayer that is both moral (confession) and historical (seeking change for Jerusalem’s condition), not merely private or general.

Question 2

How does verse 21 emphasize the timing of Gabriel’s arrival, and why might that matter for the scene?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 repeats that Daniel is “still speaking in prayer” when Gabriel appears, stressing that the arrival interrupts or overlaps the prayer rather than coming later. It also adds a time reference: “about the time of the evening offering.” In the scene, this functions like a timestamp that anchors the encounter in Israel’s worship rhythm. Even if sacrifices are disrupted, the time-marker connects Daniel’s intercession to temple-related patterns and highlights the speed of the response within the narrative.

Question 3

What details identify Gabriel in verse 21, and how does that link chapter 9 to earlier material?

Accepted Answer

Gabriel is called “the man Gabriel” and is identified as the one Daniel had “seen in the vision at the beginning.” That identification is a continuity marker: Daniel is not meeting an unknown figure but the same messenger associated with prior revelation. The passage thus frames what follows as an explanation consistent with earlier visions, not a separate, unrelated message. It also supports the idea that chapter 9 is a hinge: it moves from prayer into a revelatory interpretation delivered by the familiar messenger.

Question 4

What does Gabriel say his purpose is in verse 22, and what kind of help is implied?

Accepted Answer

In verse 22 Gabriel tells Daniel, “I am now come forth to give you wisdom and understanding.” The help is presented as insight—clarity about meaning—rather than only comfort or reassurance. The text implies Daniel needs interpretive guidance to grasp what God is doing with Jerusalem’s future. This prepares the reader for the message that follows: Gabriel’s role is not simply to announce that God heard the prayer, but to explain the matter in a way Daniel can understand.

Question 5

In verse 23, what happens “at the beginning of your petitions,” and what are the main options for understanding that phrase?

Accepted Answer

Verse 23 says that at the beginning of Daniel’s petitions “the commandment went forth,” and Gabriel has come to tell Daniel. At minimum, the text depicts a response being initiated as soon as Daniel began to pray. Interpreters differ on what the “commandment/word” is: it may be a heavenly directive to dispatch Gabriel with an answer, or it may echo a broader decree tied to Jerusalem’s restoration that underlies the message Daniel is about to receive. The verse itself does not fully specify which.

Question 6

What is the significance of Daniel being called “greatly beloved” in verse 23 within the flow of the passage?

Accepted Answer

The statement “for you are greatly beloved” sits between the note that a word went out and the instruction to consider and understand. In context, it functions as a personal assurance that Daniel is a fitting recipient of the explanation Gabriel brings. It does not directly say Daniel is sinless—Daniel has just been confessing sin—but it does present him as favored in the sense of being specifically attended to and addressed. Within the flow, it supports the urgency and care of the revelatory message.

Question 7

What does the closing instruction (“consider the matter, and understand the vision”) signal about what comes next?

Accepted Answer

The closing line signals that Gabriel’s message will require careful thought and that it relates to a “vision.” That points forward to the following verses as interpretive content rather than simple narration. It also frames the next unit as something with layers: Daniel needs “understanding,” not merely new information. In the immediate passage, the instruction marks a transition from Daniel’s prayer and Gabriel’s arrival into the explanation itself, and it sets expectations that the content will be weighty and not instantly obvious.
