Question 1

In verse 20, what actions are listed, and how do they build on each other?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 stacks four linked responses: fear Yahweh, serve him, cleave (hold fast) to him, and swear by his name. The sequence moves from inward posture (“fear”) to outward allegiance (“serve”), then to sustained attachment (“hold fast”), and finally to public verbal commitment (“swear by his name”). The list suggests that covenant loyalty is not only private belief; it has visible, social expressions, including how one makes solemn promises. The repeated focus (“Yahweh…him…to him…his name”) keeps the emphasis on a single object of loyalty.

Question 2

What reasons does verse 21 give for the loyalty described in verse 20?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 grounds the commands in Yahweh’s identity and actions. Explicitly, Yahweh is called “your praise” and “your God,” which presents him as the proper object of Israel’s honor and the one they belong to. Then the verse appeals to history: he has done “great and awesome things” for Israel. The logic is that loyalty is deserved because of proven deeds, not because Israel is being asked to commit without evidence. The mention that these are things “your eyes have seen” adds an appeal to shared experience and memory.

Question 3

How does calling Yahweh “your praise” shape the meaning of the passage?

Accepted Answer

“Your praise” suggests that Israel’s worship language is meant to match reality: Yahweh is not merely one topic among others but the one whose actions make him worthy of being celebrated. In this passage, praise is tied to concrete acts (“great and awesome things”), not to vague admiration. The phrase also connects identity and speech: Israel’s public honoring of Yahweh is part of what it means for him to be “your God.” So verse 21 links loyalty (v.20) with a fitting evaluation of Yahweh’s demonstrated character and work.

Question 4

What is the force of “by his name shall you swear” in verse 20 within its context?

Accepted Answer

In context, swearing “by his name” functions as a marker of exclusive allegiance. Oaths were serious public acts; anchoring them in a name signaled who stood behind the promise and who was being invoked as witness. By placing this clause alongside fearing, serving, and holding fast, the verse treats oath-language as part of loyalty, not a separate ritual detail. At minimum, it means Israel’s solemn promises should appeal to Yahweh rather than other powers. It may also imply that invoking other divine names would undermine the exclusive focus of the passage.

Question 5

How does verse 22 support the argument of verses 20–21?

Accepted Answer

Verse 22 provides a concrete example of Yahweh’s “great” acts by pointing to Israel’s transformation from a small family to a vast people. It recalls the ancestors going to Egypt as “seventy persons,” then contrasts that with Israel’s current size, “as the stars of the sky for multitude.” The text explicitly credits this outcome to “Yahweh your God,” reinforcing the claim that loyalty is a response to what God has done. The verse also ties present identity to past origins, strengthening the idea of covenant continuity across generations.

Question 6

What does the passage assume about the relationship between present Israel and “your fathers” (v.22)?

Accepted Answer

The passage assumes a strong continuity: the audience is addressed as the same community whose ancestors went down to Egypt. Even though “your fathers” are distinguished from the present group, the narrative treats Israel as one people across time. This is reinforced by the direct address (“your fathers…now Yahweh your God has made you…”), connecting ancestral smallness to present multitude. The effect is to make the past relevant: what happened to the ancestors is not distant trivia but part of the basis for present covenant obligation and identity described in verses 20–21.

Question 7

What does “which your eyes have seen” (v.21) contribute to the passage’s logic?

Accepted Answer

The phrase adds an evidential and communal weight to the reasons for loyalty. It frames Yahweh’s acts as known realities, not merely stories detached from experience. The wording can be read as addressing the community as a whole: Israel’s identity is shaped by shared memory of decisive events. Either way, the point is that the call to fear, serve, and hold fast is anchored in witnessed or commonly held knowledge of Yahweh’s “great and awesome things.” The passage argues from remembered acts to rightful praise and exclusive allegiance.
