Words like “fear,” “hold fast,” and “swear by his name” can carry a range of social meanings in an ancient setting (emotions, loyalty, public identity, and legal promises). Also, speeches can address a community as a single “you,” which raises the question of whether phrases like “your eyes have seen” are individual or corporate.
