Question 1

In verses 18–20, what two realities are held together about the eastern tribes’ land and their responsibilities?

Accepted Answer

The passage holds together (1) a completed gift and (2) an unfinished obligation. Moses says Yahweh has already given the eastern tribes their land “to possess” (v. 18). Yet their receipt of territory does not end their involvement in Israel’s larger mission. Their fighting men must cross the Jordan armed “before” their Israelite brothers (v. 18). The arrangement lasts until the other tribes also receive “rest” and possess their own land beyond the Jordan (v. 20). So the text ties possession of land to continued solidarity with the rest of Israel.

Question 2

What groups are explicitly allowed to remain in the eastern cities, and what reason does Moses mention?

Accepted Answer

Verse 19 explicitly permits the wives, “little ones” (children), and cattle to remain in the cities Moses has given east of the Jordan. Moses adds an aside: he knows these tribes have “much cattle.” That note supplies a practical reason for leaving dependents and herds behind—moving large livestock and noncombatants with a campaigning force would be difficult and would increase vulnerability. The passage assumes a division between those who fight and those whose presence is needed to keep households and herds stable during the campaign.

Question 3

How does the repeated language of “given” shape the way the passage explains land possession?

Accepted Answer

The verbs of giving appear throughout: Yahweh has “given” the land to the eastern tribes (v. 18), Moses has “given” them cities to live in (v. 19), and Yahweh will “give” land beyond the Jordan to the other tribes (v. 20). This repetition presents Israel’s territorial possession as grounded in Yahweh’s grant, not merely in military success. At the same time, Moses’ role in “giving” cities highlights the mediated, organized distribution under Israel’s leadership. The land is treated as a gift with ordered allocation and shared responsibilities.

Question 4

What is the stated endpoint (“until…then…”) for the eastern tribes’ armed service?

Accepted Answer

Verse 20 sets a clear endpoint with two linked conditions: the eastern fighters continue “until” Yahweh gives “rest” to their brothers “as to you,” and until those brothers also possess the land Yahweh gives them beyond the Jordan. Only “then” may the armed men return—“every man to his possession,” which Moses says he has given them. The text therefore frames the military obligation as temporary and goal-oriented, ending when the other tribes reach a comparable settled condition in their own allotted territory.

Question 5

What does the passage communicate by repeatedly calling the other Israelites “brothers”?

Accepted Answer

Calling the other Israelites “brothers” (vv. 18, 20) emphasizes that the tribes are bound together as one people rather than separate, competing groups. The term supports Moses’ logic that early beneficiaries of land should not detach from the fate of the rest. It also clarifies that the upcoming campaign is not simply an expansion project for one subgroup; it is the shared work of a family-like community under Yahweh’s direction. The language frames military cooperation and land distribution as matters of kinship loyalty within Israel.

Question 6

What does the text say—and not say—about how the eastern tribes would participate in the conquest?

Accepted Answer

The text says their “men of valor” must cross over armed and do so “before” their brothers (v. 18). It also says this continues until the rest have “rest” and possess their land (v. 20). But it does not spell out operational details: it does not list numbers, length of rotations, whether every eligible man must go, or the exact tactical meaning of “before.” It also does not describe the security arrangements for the families and livestock left behind. Those details are outside the explicit claims of this passage.
