Seeing, rejecting, and hiding Yahweh observes what is happening and “abhors” his own “sons and daughters” because they have provoked him. He announces a deliberate withdrawal: “I will hide my face from them,” meaning he will stop showing favor or protection and will watch what their “end” becomes. The reason given is their character: they are called a perverse generation and children with no reliability.
A matching response—jealousy for jealousy Israel has made Yahweh “jealous” by giving devotion to what is “not God” and by chasing empty “vanities.” Yahweh replies in kind: he will make them jealous through “those who are not a people” and will provoke them through “a foolish nation.” The logic is reciprocity: their choices invite an answering pressure that mirrors their provocation.
Escalating disaster imagery The passage portrays anger as a fire that reaches down to Sheol and consumes land and mountains, describing devastation in cosmic-scale language. Yahweh then stacks disasters: he will “heap evils” and “spend” his arrows, a picture of repeated strikes rather than a single blow. The results include hunger, burning heat, bitter destruction, attacks from wild animals, poisonous bites, and violent death. Threat comes from every direction—outside by the sword, inside by terror—and it sweeps across ages and social categories.
Literary Context
These verses sit inside the “Song of Moses” (Deuteronomy 32), a poetic witness meant to be remembered and recited. The song moves from describing Yahweh’s faithfulness and Israel’s calling to exposing Israel’s later turning aside, then to consequences and eventual resolution. This unit follows earlier lines that portray Israel abandoning its source of life and chasing other powers, and it pushes forward the consequence side of the song: Yahweh’s response is both relational (hiding his face) and historical (national calamities). The ending of the unit also signals a concern for how nations interpret what happens.
Historical Context
Deuteronomy frames Moses’ final instruction to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before entry into the land. The song presents a long-range warning: once settled and secure, Israel may be tempted to blend in with surrounding cultures and their worship patterns, which were common across Late Bronze Age Canaan and nearby regions. In that world, national fortunes were often read as proof that one people’s god had defeated another’s; the passage assumes observers will draw political conclusions from military outcomes. The unit therefore ties Israel’s internal loyalty to public, international perception.

Total ruin considered, then restrained for public reasons Yahweh says he had it in mind to scatter them and erase their memory among humans. But he checks that outcome because of the enemy’s likely reaction: adversaries would misjudge the meaning of the events. They might claim, “Our hand is exalted,” denying that Yahweh had directed the outcome at all.
These verses present Yahweh responding to Israel’s provocation. The text explicitly says he “abhors” what his “sons and daughters” have become and announces, “I will hide my face from them” (vv. 19–20). In context, that reads as a withdrawal of favor and protection, paired with a decision to “see what their end shall be” rather than immediately intervening.
The passage also explicitly frames Israel’s offense as turning devotion toward what is “not God” and “vanities” (v. 21). Yahweh’s response is described as fitting or matching: Israel’s jealousy-provoking worship is met with Yahweh provoking Israel’s jealousy through “those who are not a people” and “a foolish nation” (v. 21).
Finally, the text stacks images of escalating disaster: fire reaching “to the lowest Sheol,” “arrows” being “spent,” hunger, scorching heat, beasts, poison, sword, and terror (vv. 22–25). Yet the unit ends by saying total erasure is restrained so enemies will not misread the outcome as their own strength or as proof that “Yahweh has not done all this” (vv. 26–27). That makes public interpretation of Israel’s downfall part of the stated logic.
1) What “hide my face” means in practice. Some readers take it mainly as Yahweh stepping back—removing protection and letting consequences and hostile forces run their course. Others think the language goes further: “hide my face” still implies active opposition, since Yahweh then speaks in first person about sending calamities (arrows, beasts, sword) rather than merely permitting them.
2) Who “not a people” / “a foolish nation” refers to. Some read it generally: outsiders with no recognized status from Israel’s viewpoint, used as an instrument of pressure and humiliation. Others look for a more specific referent within Israel’s later history (a particular foreign power or set of invaders). The text here does not name the group, but it does present them as an “outside” mirror-response to Israel’s “not-god” choices.
3) How to take the “fire…to Sheol” and cosmic language. Many read vv. 22–23 as poetic intensity describing comprehensive devastation (from land’s produce to the deepest realm). Others allow that the poetry could also point to concrete historical catastrophes (famine, invasion, plague) while still speaking in elevated, world-encompassing terms.
The passage mixes relational language (“hide my face”) with direct action language (“I will heap evils…spend my arrows,” vv. 23–24). It also uses deliberately broad labels (“not a people,” “foolish nation”) and highly charged poetry (“burns to the lowest Sheol,” v. 22). Those features invite different judgments about specificity (which enemy?) and causation (withdrawal vs. direct sending), even when readers agree on the basic storyline.
