Literary Context
This passage sits inside the “Song of Moses” (Deuteronomy 32), a long poetic warning and witness meant to be remembered. Earlier the song praises Yahweh’s care and describes Israel’s turning away; later it moves toward announcing coming trouble and then eventual intervention. In vv. 28–35 the poem tightens its argument: it exposes the people’s lack of insight, interprets their defeats as Yahweh’s handing them over, and then uses sharp images (Sodom/Gomorrah, poisonous wine) to portray moral rot. It ends by stating that the timing and repayment of the coming disaster are held by Yahweh.
Historical Context
Deuteronomy is framed as Moses’ final instruction to Israel on the edge of entering the land, after years in the wilderness. The song functions like a public memory piece for a community about to settle among other peoples and pressures, where loyalty conflicts and social injustice could grow. The references to Sodom and Gomorrah draw on an older story of notorious cities used as symbols of extreme corruption and ruin. The military math (“one chases a thousand”) fits the ancient Near Eastern outlook that victory depends on divine backing, not only numbers, weapons, or skill.
Theological Significance
This part of the Song of Moses explains Israel’s situation as a moral and spiritual failure, not a simple story of bad luck or weak tactics. The people are described as lacking good sense and refusing to think through where their path ends (vv. 28–29). The surprising “math” of defeat (few enemies routing many) is presented as evidence that Israel has lost the backing of its own “Rock,” and that Yahweh has handed them over (v. 30). The poem then paints Israel’s output (their “vine,” “grapes,” and “wine”) as not just flawed but harmful—like poison—using Sodom and Gomorrah as a symbol of extreme corruption (vv. 32–33).

Stored reckoning and the timing of repayment Yahweh asks whether this is not “laid up in store” with him, sealed among his treasures—kept in reserve. Then Yahweh claims repayment as his own: he will pay back at the moment their foot slips. The day of their calamity is said to be near, and the coming events are pictured as rushing toward them.
The closing lines shift to timing and ownership of judgment. The coming reckoning is pictured as already “stored up” with Yahweh, like something sealed away until the right moment (v. 34). Payback belongs to him, and it will arrive suddenly when “their foot slips” and calamity is near (v. 35; compare Romans 12:19).
Who is “they”? Some read “they” as Israel as a whole in a general, enduring sense (the nation’s pattern of unwise choices). Others think the focus is narrower: particular leaders or a specific generation whose choices are bringing the crisis.
Who is the “Rock” in v. 30? Many take “their Rock” as Yahweh (consistent with the line “Yahweh delivered them up”). Others think the wording plays on two objects of trust: Israel’s true Rock versus an alternative “rock” (something they relied on instead of Yahweh). On that reading, “their Rock sold them” could mean the thing they trusted failed them—yet v. 30 still names Yahweh as the one ultimately handing them over.
What do “our enemies… being judges” mean (v. 31)? Some interpret it as enemies being forced to admit that Israel’s God is not like their gods. Others read it as enemies acting as “judges” in a more practical sense: even they can see that the explanation for Israel’s collapse is not ordinary strength, but a deeper cause.
The poem uses compressed, poetic wording. Pronouns are broad (“they”), and “Rock” is used both as a title for Israel’s God and as a comparative term (“their rock… our Rock”). Also, the line about enemies “being judges” can mean either “admitting” something or “evaluating” the situation.
Explicitly, the text claims (1) Israel lacks understanding and fails to consider its end (vv. 28–29); (2) their defeat is explained by being “sold” and “delivered up,” with Yahweh named as the one who hands them over (v. 30); (3) Israel’s “vine” is portrayed as producing bitter, poisonous results, linked by imagery to Sodom and Gomorrah (vv. 32–33); and (4) Yahweh stores up and controls the timing of repayment, which will come swiftly at the moment of collapse (vv. 34–35). Theological inference that follows naturally is that national security and defeat are portrayed as morally and spiritually charged, under Yahweh’s governance, and that judgment is depicted as deliberate and timed rather than random.
