Question 1

What social relationships are addressed, and in what order do the commands move?

Accepted Answer

The passage starts with the household relationship between children and parents (“honor your father and your mother”). It then shifts to broad neighbor boundaries: protection of life (“not murder”), protection of marriage (“not commit adultery”), protection of property (“not steal”), and protection of reputation and safety in disputes (“not give false testimony against your neighbor”). It ends by focusing on inward desire—coveting or desiring what belongs to a neighbor—listing spouse and household assets. The movement is from family honor to outward actions that harm others, and finally to the inner impulse that can drive those harms.

Question 2

What reasons or outcomes are attached to honoring parents in verse 16, and what is the setting for those outcomes?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 attaches a promised outcome to honoring both father and mother: “that your days may be long” and “that it may go well with you.” The setting is concrete and local: it is “in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.” The verse frames the command as already established (“as Yahweh your God commanded you”) and links family honor to communal stability and flourishing in the land Israel is about to inhabit. The text presents the outcome as a practical good connected to life in that place under covenant life.

Question 3

How do verses 17–20 describe harms done to a neighbor, and what kinds of harm are included?

Accepted Answer

Verses 17–20 name harms through direct action and through speech. “Murder” targets the taking of life. “Adultery” targets violation of marriage bonds, which affects spouses and households. “Stealing” targets taking another person’s property and livelihood. “False testimony against your neighbor” targets harm done with words, especially in situations where testimony can decide outcomes and shape a person’s standing or safety. Together, the commands cover physical harm, relational harm, economic harm, and reputational or legal harm—basic protections needed for a community to endure.

Question 4

What does the phrase “against your neighbor” add to the meaning of the false-testimony command (v. 20)?

Accepted Answer

The wording does not merely say “do not lie” in general; it specifies false testimony “against your neighbor.” That frames the speech as adversarial—words used to damage another person. In a small community, such testimony could influence judgments, social trust, and even someone’s security. The language fits formal dispute settings, but even on its face it highlights the relational direction of the wrong: it is not only untrue speech, but untrue speech aimed at harming a particular person within the community. The neighbor language keeps the focus on interpersonal harm, not just abstract honesty.

Question 5

In verse 21, what items are named, and what do they suggest about what “house” includes?

Accepted Answer

Verse 21 names a neighbor’s wife, then a neighbor’s “house,” and then expands “house” with a list: field, male servant, female servant, ox, donkey, and finally “anything that is your neighbor’s.” This suggests that “house” is not only a building. It can represent the whole household economy: land, labor, and animals that support family life. The list clarifies scope so the command cannot be reduced to one kind of property. The closing phrase (“anything”) makes the boundary comprehensive: the desire is aimed at what belongs to another household, broadly defined.

Question 6

How is the final command (v. 21) different in focus from the previous commands, and how does it relate to them?

Accepted Answer

The earlier commands mainly address outward actions: killing, adultery, stealing, and harmful testimony. The final command targets an inward direction—coveting or desiring what belongs to someone else. The text still keeps it neighbor-centered: the desire is toward a neighbor’s spouse or property. This command can be read as addressing the root that can lead to the earlier wrongs: intense wanting can become planning, taking, or betrayal. Even without describing a resulting action, it draws a boundary inside the person, treating disordered desire toward another’s household as socially destructive, not morally neutral.
