5:8-10Meaning
No images, no worship of them, and Yahweh’s generational dealing The command first prohibits making an “engraved image” or any crafted likeness drawn from sky, land, or sea. It then forbids two responses toward such things: bowing down and serving. The reason given is relational and moral: Yahweh, Israel’s God, is described as jealous—he does not accept rivals. The passage adds a pattern of outcomes: the wrongdoing of those who hate him is “visited” into the third and fourth generation, while loyal love is shown to “thousands” who love him and keep his commands.
