Deuteronomy 5:8–15 restates covenant boundaries that protect Israel’s exclusive loyalty to Yahweh. The text makes three linked moves: (1) it blocks worship through made objects, (2) it treats Yahweh’s name as morally weighty speech, and (3) it sets a weekly rhythm where rest is shared across the whole household economy.

Explicitly, the passage forbids making an “engraved image” or any “likeness” drawn from sky, land, or sea, and it forbids bowing down to or serving such items. It also says Yahweh is “jealous,” and it describes lasting consequences for those who hate him and lasting kindness to those who love him and keep his commands. It further prohibits taking Yahweh’s name “in vain,” with the warning that Yahweh will not treat that as harmless. Finally, it commands Sabbath observance as a set-apart day, with a broad no-work rule that includes children, servants, work animals, and the resident outsider “within your gates,” grounded in Israel’s remembered liberation from slavery in Egypt.

Where interpretation differs

1) What exactly is banned by “image/likeness.” Some readers think the wording bans making any visual representation connected to the divine, because it is too easily turned into an object of reverence. Others think the main target is making objects for worship—the ban is on crafting a representation in order to bow down or serve it, not on art in general.

2) What “visiting…on the third and fourth generation” means. Some take it as God directly punishing later descendants for an ancestor’s sin. Others read it as God holding a family line accountable as long as the same hatred and pattern continues—so the statement describes how sin’s effects and judgments extend through a household across time, especially when later generations participate.

3) What counts as “taking the name…in vain.” Some narrow it to careless speech (like empty or flippant use of the divine name). Others broaden it to include bearing Yahweh’s name in a false way—using God’s name to cover lies, broken promises, or manipulative religious talk.

Why the disagreement exists

The passage uses broad, compressed wording (“likeness,” “in vain,” “visiting…generations”) without listing every example. It also combines direct prohibitions with reasons that are relational (“jealous”) and historical (Egyptian slavery), which invites readers to ask how far each principle extends beyond the specific setting.

What this passage clearly contributes

It frames worship boundaries as protection for exclusive allegiance: Yahweh is not to be represented and approached through crafted rivals, and his name is not to be treated as empty language. It also ties weekly rest to community justice: the Sabbath is not only about an individual stopping work, but about an entire household and local community—including servants and outsiders—sharing relief from labor. The motivation given in this telling is Israel’s liberation story: the God who brought them out of forced labor requires a rhythm that prevents a return to endless labor for others.
