Don’t narrate victory as personal deserving Moses targets what Israel might “say in your heart” after Yahweh drives out the nations. The mistaken conclusion is: “Yahweh brought me in because of my righteousness.” Moses counters by stating a different explanation in the same breath: the nations are being driven out because of their wickedness.

A concluding command to recognize the point “Know therefore” signals the takeaway: Yahweh is not giving this “good land” because Israel is righteous. Moses adds a blunt characterization—Israel is “stiff-necked”—to reinforce that the gift cannot be credited to their moral quality.
Literary Context
These lines sit inside Moses’ long speech urging Israel to trust and obey as they prepare to enter Canaan (Deuteronomy 5–11). Just before this, he describes Yahweh going ahead like a consuming fire to defeat stronger peoples (9:1–3), which could tempt Israel to interpret victory as personal deserving. Immediately after, Moses recalls Israel’s repeated rebellion, especially the golden calf episode (9:7–29), to supply evidence for the claim that they are not morally superior. The passage functions as a direct correction of Israel’s inner narrative about why they will succeed.
Historical Context
Deuteronomy presents Israel camped east of the Jordan, poised to cross into Canaan after years in the wilderness. In that setting, land possession meant security, status, and a future for clans—so it was easy to frame conquest as proof of virtue. Moses addresses a community shaped by deliverance and wandering, about to displace existing peoples with established settlements. He explains the takeover in terms of Yahweh’s action and earlier oaths to the patriarchs, while also portraying the current inhabitants as corrupt enough to warrant removal.
Theological Significance
Deuteronomy 9:4–6 directly challenges an inner story Israel might tell itself after military success: “I got this land because I’m righteous.” The passage explicitly denies that explanation twice (vv. 4–6) and supplies alternatives: the nations are being removed “for the wickedness of these nations” (vv. 4–5), and Yahweh is also acting to keep a prior sworn word to the ancestors named here (v. 5). The description “stiff-necked” (v. 6) supports the same point: Israel is not being portrayed as morally superior.

Some readers take “for the wickedness of these nations” mainly as a statement about moral guilt justifying removal: the focus is the nations’ wrongdoing, measured by Yahweh.
Others emphasize that the text’s main target is Israel’s self-crediting, so “wickedness” functions primarily as the contrast term that blocks Israel’s self-congratulation, without trying to map out a full moral ranking system between groups.
Some also differ on how to relate the two stated reasons in v. 5: (1) the nations’ wickedness and (2) confirming the oath to the fathers. One reading treats them as complementary explanations (both true). Another stresses the oath as the deeper, controlling reason, with “wickedness” describing how the promise comes about in history.
Why the disagreement exists The passage gives clear negatives about Israel (“not for your righteousness… not for the uprightness of your heart… stiff-necked”) but gives less detail about how Yahweh evaluates “wickedness” or how the two reasons in v. 5 are ordered. Because it is a corrective speech aimed at Israel’s pride, interpreters weigh differently which parts are primary (the anti-self-credit argument) and which are background (the moral assessment of the nations and the oath’s role).
