Question 1

What inner conclusion does Moses anticipate Israel might reach after Yahweh drives out the nations (v. 4)?

Accepted Answer

Moses anticipates an internal explanation (“say in your heart”) that treats the conquest as moral validation: “For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land.” The issue is not only what Israel might say publicly but how they might interpret events to themselves. In the immediate context (9:1–3), Israel is about to defeat stronger peoples, which can easily be read as proof of personal worth. Verse 4 names that self-congratulating storyline so it can be directly rejected.

Question 2

How does v. 4 correct that anticipated conclusion, and what alternative reason is given?

Accepted Answer

Verse 4 corrects Israel’s anticipated claim by replacing the supposed cause. Instead of “because of my righteousness,” Moses states “whereas for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh does drive them out from before you.” The correction shifts focus away from Israel’s moral quality and onto Yahweh’s action in response to the nations’ wrongdoing. The grammar of the verse contrasts two explanations: the one Israel might invent and the one Moses asserts. The correction is about the reason for the nations’ removal, not about Israel earning the land.

Question 3

What repeated denials in v. 5 strengthen Moses’s point about Israel’s moral credit?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 repeats the denial in expanded form: “Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, do you go in to possess their land.” By adding “uprightness of heart,” the text closes off a second possible defense—claiming inner sincerity or good intentions as the basis for receiving the land. The repetition is emphatic: Israel’s possession is not grounded in their ethical performance or inner character. This reinforces that the passage is targeting self-attribution of deserving, not merely correcting a careless phrase.

Question 4

According to v. 5, what two reasons are explicitly given for Yahweh’s driving out the nations?

Accepted Answer

Verse 5 gives two explicit reasons. First, “for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you.” Second, “that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” These reasons both exclude Israel’s righteousness as the basis. One reason focuses on the nations’ wrongdoing; the other focuses on Yahweh’s prior sworn commitment to the ancestors. The verse presents both as part of the explanation for why events unfold as Israel takes possession.

Question 5

How does v. 6 function as a conclusion, and what is the effect of calling Israel “stiff-necked”?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 begins with “Know therefore,” marking a takeaway summary: Yahweh “doesn’t give you this good land… for your righteousness.” The concluding label “for you are a stiff-necked people” works as supporting evidence for the summary. It undercuts any claim that Israel is receiving the land because they are morally exemplary. In the flow of the chapter (9:7–29), Moses will recount episodes of rebellion to illustrate this characterization. Here, “stiff-necked” intensifies the passage’s anti-self-credit argument.

Question 6

What does the repeated focus on Yahweh’s action (thrust out, drive out, give) contribute to the passage’s meaning?

Accepted Answer

The repeated verbs make Yahweh the main agent of the outcome: Yahweh thrusts out nations, drives them out, and gives the land. That emphasis supports Moses’s argument that Israel should not interpret possession as a reward earned by their virtue. Even where Israel participates in conquest, the passage frames the decisive movement as Yahweh’s doing. This grammar-level focus aligns with the explicit denials of “for your righteousness.” The text is not offering a neutral history lesson; it is shaping how Israel explains its success—by Yahweh’s purposes rather than Israel’s merit.

Question 7

How do the named ancestors in v. 5 (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob) shape the logic of the argument?

Accepted Answer

Naming Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob ties the present gift of land to a prior oath, making the explanation larger than the current generation’s moral track record. The logic is: possession is not awarded because this generation is righteous; it is connected to Yahweh’s sworn commitment to the family line. The naming also makes the “establish the word” concrete and relational rather than abstract. It suggests continuity: what happens in Israel’s time is framed as Yahweh confirming something already promised, not as Yahweh reacting to Israel’s deserving behavior in the moment.
