Here he shifts from death itself to inheritance: even if one lives wisely and produces much, the results pass to another. Immediately after, the argument turns toward a restrained alternative—receiving food, drink, and work as a gift rather than as a guarantee of control (2:24–26).
Historical Context
Ecclesiastes speaks from an Israelite setting where land, households, and royal or private projects could accumulate across a lifetime and then be transferred through inheritance. Long-term building, agriculture, administration, and trade depended on stable succession, yet no one could fully control the character or competence of the next holder. In an era often associated with large building efforts and growing wealth, the gap between effort and outcome would be easy to feel: one person’s disciplined skill can become another person’s unearned possession, whether that person preserves or squanders it.
Theological Significance
