Question 1

What specific reason does the speaker give for “hating life” in this unit?

Accepted Answer

The speaker ties his hatred of life to the experience of work “under the sun” feeling grievous. The stated reason is not simply that work is hard, but that the results of work are unstable and cannot be kept. He calls this “vanity” and compares it to chasing wind, a picture of effort that cannot secure a solid outcome. The line of thought then narrows: he hates his labor because he must leave what he produced to someone after him, making the whole project feel like loss rather than gain.

Question 2

How does the theme shift from death in 2:12–16 to inheritance in 2:17–19?

Accepted Answer

Earlier, the speaker notes that both wise and foolish people die, which limits what wisdom can ultimately secure. In 2:17–19 he moves from the end of life to what happens after life: whatever a person builds still passes on. The new pressure point is not merely that the worker dies, but that someone else will “rule over” what the worker produced. The successor might be wise or foolish, and the worker cannot know. The argument’s focus becomes loss of control over outcomes rather than only the inevitability of death.

Question 3

What does the repeated phrase “under the sun” add to the meaning of the complaint?

Accepted Answer

“Under the sun” locates the argument in ordinary human experience—life as observed from within this world’s limits. It signals that the speaker is evaluating labor in terms of what it can secure on its own: stability, lasting possession, predictable legacy, and inner rest. In that frame, even wise work cannot prevent transfer to an unknown successor. The phrase keeps the reader focused on the mismatch between effort and lasting control in the visible, everyday order of life, rather than on an explanation that depends on hidden outcomes beyond one’s horizon.

Question 4

In verses 19–21, what is most upsetting about the successor, and why does that produce “despair”?

Accepted Answer

The most upsetting point is not merely that someone else receives the results, but that the worker cannot know whether that person will be wise or foolish—and yet that person will still control what was produced “wisely.” The successor’s competence and character are uncertain, but their authority over the worker’s achievements is certain. That combination makes the worker’s skill, knowledge, and disciplined effort feel exposed to being wasted, mishandled, or simply detached from the one who earned it. The speaker describes this as moving his heart toward despair over all his labor.

Question 5

What does the word “portion” most naturally refer to in verse 21 within this argument?

Accepted Answer

Within the flow of thought, “portion” points to what ends up in another person’s hands as the outcome of the worker’s labor. It can be heard as an inheritance share (the estate or goods transferred), but it also functions more broadly as the practical payoff of work—what the labor “adds up to” in the end. The emphasis is that the worker’s portion is not retained by the worker; it is left to someone who did not labor for it. The exact form (property, projects, status) is not specified, but the transfer is central.

Question 6

Why does the speaker call this situation “vanity” and also “a great evil” (v. 21)?

Accepted Answer

Calling it “vanity” highlights futility: intense effort does not secure lasting possession or predictable benefit. The phrase “great evil” adds moral and emotional weight. It marks the situation as more than disappointing; it feels like a deep wrongness in how outcomes fall out in human life. The text does not explicitly spell out the source of the evil, but it does show the mismatch: wisdom, knowledge, and skill can lead to an end result that benefits someone who did not labor, while the laborer is left with grief and restlessness. The language conveys shock, not detached observation.

Question 7

According to verses 22–23, what does the worker actually “have” from all the toil and inner striving?

Accepted Answer

The speaker answers his own question by describing what fills the worker’s days and nights: sorrow, grief, and a heart that does not rest even at night. In other words, when labor is viewed as the path to secure gain under the sun, the “having” is not stable profit but a troubled inner life. The passage is not denying that work produces visible results; it is saying that the worker’s lasting possession from the toil, considered as ultimate gain, collapses into anxiety and weariness. This conclusion is capped again with “This also is vanity.”
