Question 1

What prompts the speaker to “turn” and consider wisdom, madness, and folly in v.12, and how does the mention of a king’s successor shape the question?

Accepted Answer

In v.12 the speaker shifts from testing pleasure and achievements to re-examining wisdom alongside its opposites. The line about “the king’s successor” sets a boundary: a future ruler will not be able to do something fundamentally new, only what has been done before. That expectation of repetition makes the inquiry more pointed—if even royal power can’t produce lasting novelty, can wisdom produce lasting advantage? The succession reference also fits the passage’s concern with what remains after a person is gone.

Question 2

In vv.13–14, what images does the text use to compare wisdom and folly, and what do those images imply?

Accepted Answer

The passage compares wisdom to light and folly to darkness (v.13). Then it restates the contrast with the wise having “eyes” and the fool walking in darkness (v.14). These images imply practical clarity: wisdom helps a person perceive what is in front of them and navigate life with fewer blind steps. The comparison is not neutral; it explicitly says wisdom “excels” folly. Whatever “vanity” means later, these verses insist that wisdom has a real, observable advantage within everyday experience.

Question 3

What does the speaker “perceive” in v.14 that complicates the earlier praise of wisdom?

Accepted Answer

After affirming wisdom’s superiority, the speaker recognizes a leveling fact: “one event happens to them all.” This perception does not deny the practical difference between wisdom and folly; it complicates it by introducing an outcome that does not respect that difference. The structure matters: the text first establishes wisdom’s benefit and then places it under a larger horizon where that benefit does not guarantee a different final result. The speaker is trying to hold both realities together rather than choosing only one.

Question 4

How does the inner dialogue in v.15 (“I said in my heart…”) advance the argument?

Accepted Answer

In v.15 the speaker internalizes the earlier observation: if the same thing that happens to the fool will happen to him, then what is the lasting payoff of being “more wise”? The question is not “Is wisdom better today?” but “What enduring advantage does it secure?” The verse ends with his conclusion that this too is “vanity,” meaning that when judged by lasting gain, the advantage of wisdom feels canceled or hollowed out by the shared fate he anticipates.

Question 5

According to v.16, what two factors erase long-term distinction between wise and fool?

Accepted Answer

Verse 16 names (1) the loss of lasting remembrance and (2) death. Over time, “in the days to come,” both wise and fool are forgotten; neither retains permanent public memory. Then the verse states the blunt leveling fact: the wise person “must die just like the fool.” Together, forgetting and mortality remove any guarantee that wisdom will preserve a person’s name or create an enduring difference. The argument is not that wisdom never mattered, but that time and death undo its claim to permanence.

Question 6

How do vv.13–14 and vv.15–16 work together to define what kind of “advantage” wisdom does and does not provide?

Accepted Answer

Verses 13–14 define wisdom’s advantage as practical and present: it brings “light,” vision, and better navigation through life than folly. Verses 15–16 then deny that this advantage is ultimate or permanent: the same “event” comes to both, both are forgotten, and both die. Put together, the text distinguishes between relative benefit and final outcome. Wisdom can improve how one moves through life, but it cannot secure exemption from mortality or guarantee lasting remembrance, which is the passage’s main pressure point.

Question 7

What does the passage suggest about human efforts to secure lasting significance through insight or achievement?

Accepted Answer

Explicitly, the passage says wisdom is better than folly, yet it also says wisdom does not prevent the shared fate of death and does not preserve memory forever. From those claims, the implied perspective is that human insight and accomplishment are limited tools for securing lasting significance. Even if wisdom brings real gains, it cannot control the final horizon that matters most to the speaker: the end of life and the erosion of remembrance over time. That is why the speaker can praise wisdom and still call the outcome “vanity.”
