Question 1

In v.9, what two claims does the speaker make about his condition as he became “great” in Jerusalem?

Accepted Answer

Verse 9 holds two statements together. First, the speaker says he became “great” and surpassed everyone before him in Jerusalem. That is a claim about scale and reputation: his achievements outdid earlier leaders or notable figures in the city’s memory. Second, he adds that his “wisdom also remained with” him. Whatever else is meant, the text presents his success as not requiring the loss of judgment or capability. This combination matters for the later verdict, because it suggests the outcome in v.11 is not explained away as the result of confusion, ignorance, or simple immaturity.

Question 2

In v.10, what language shows the extent of his pursuit of enjoyment, and how is it described?

Accepted Answer

The speaker stresses how unrestricted his pursuit was: “Whatever my eyes desired, I didn’t keep from them,” and “I didn’t withhold my heart from any joy.” The language is totalizing—he frames it as holding nothing back from desire and joy. He also describes the result as emotional satisfaction: “my heart rejoiced because of all my labor.” So the verse does not portray the experiment as miserable or failed in the moment. It portrays it as reaching the goal of felt enjoyment and celebration tied to what he was doing and producing.

Question 3

What does the phrase “this was my portion from all my labor” (v.10) indicate about what he gained?

Accepted Answer

Calling enjoyment his “portion” suggests a limited share that can actually be taken from work. The verse ties that portion directly to the heart’s rejoicing “because of all my labor,” so at minimum it includes the satisfaction experienced in the process and outcome of working. The term also leaves open whether the “portion” includes material results, but the passage’s logic leans toward what is personally enjoyed rather than what is permanently secured. It frames the gain as real but bounded—what labor yields to the worker in the present, not a lasting surplus guaranteed to remain.

Question 4

How does v.11 shift the perspective compared with vv.9–10, and what action signals that shift?

Accepted Answer

Verses 9–10 speak from inside the experience: the speaker describes what he became, what he allowed himself, and what he felt. Verse 11 shifts to an after-the-fact review: “Then I looked at all the works… and at the labor.” The key action is evaluation from a distance—stepping back to assess the whole set of accomplishments as a completed portfolio. That change in perspective sets up the sweeping verdict. The passage implies that immediate enjoyment and later assessment can diverge: what felt rewarding while doing it can look empty when measured for enduring advantage.

Question 5

What is included in the “all” that is judged “vanity” in v.11, based on the immediate context?

Accepted Answer

In context, “all” is anchored to what he has just described: “all the works that my hands had worked” and “the labor that I had labored to do.” That includes large accomplishments and the effort invested to achieve them. Since vv.9–10 emphasize greatness, projects, and the enjoyment that accompanied labor, the “all” likely covers the whole complex of achievement plus the lived experience surrounding it, at least as a candidate for ultimate gain. The verdict is not merely about one failed project; it is about the overall result when his work is totaled and examined.

Question 6

What does “no profit under the sun” add beyond saying “all was vanity and chasing after wind” (v.11)?

Accepted Answer

“Vanity” and “chasing after wind” describe the quality of the outcome—empty, ungraspable, not solid. “No profit under the sun” adds the specific conclusion about net gain: after counting everything, there is no enduring advantage that remains as a surplus from the effort. “Under the sun” keeps the claim within the horizon of ordinary human life as experienced in this world. Together, the phrases say more than “I didn’t enjoy it.” They say, “Even with enjoyment and success, the bottom line does not produce lasting gain when evaluated within life’s normal limits.”},{
