Question 1

What does the speaker claim to have “returned and saw,” and what setting frames these observations?

Accepted Answer

The speaker claims he “returned and saw all the oppressions” done “under the sun.” In Ecclesiastes, that phrase frames ordinary human experience as it can be observed in the world—public life, social arrangements, and daily realities. The point is not a private problem but a broad survey: oppression is presented as repeated and visible. The observation is grounded in what can be seen: tears, power imbalance, and the absence of comfort. The setting matters because the speaker is reporting the world as it often functions, not offering an idealized picture of how it should function.

Question 2

In verse 1, what two contrasting “sides” are described, and how does that shape the scene?

Accepted Answer

Verse 1 sets up a contrast between the oppressed and the oppressors. On one side are “the tears of those who were oppressed,” highlighting vulnerability and suffering. On the other side are the oppressors, and “power” is said to be with them. That detail explains why the oppression continues: those doing harm have the leverage to maintain it. The scene is shaped by asymmetry—pain without remedy, and strength used against the weak. The repeated line “they had no comforter” intensifies the picture: there is neither emotional support nor effective intervention.

Question 3

Why does the text repeat that the oppressed “had no comforter,” and what can “comforter” reasonably include?

Accepted Answer

The repetition underlines that the oppressed lack any meaningful help. The speaker is not only moved by their tears but also by their isolation. “Comforter” can include simple human consolation—someone to stand with them, grieve with them, and affirm their suffering. But in this context, it can also include practical protection or advocacy, since the oppressors have “power” and the oppressed appear unable to change their situation. The repeated phrase highlights a double absence: no one relieves the emotional burden, and no one counters the power that sustains the oppression.

Question 4

How does verse 2 connect to verse 1, and what kind of judgment is being made about the dead and the living?

Accepted Answer

Verse 2 begins with “Therefore,” tying the comparison directly to the scene in verse 1. Because oppression is widespread, uncomforted, and backed by power, the speaker says he “praised the dead…more than the living.” The judgment is comparative: the dead are “better off” in the sense that they are no longer exposed to ongoing oppression and its helplessness. The text does not say the dead are morally superior or that death is inherently good. It argues from exposure: living people remain within the system where oppression persists, while the dead are beyond it.

Question 5

What further step does verse 3 take beyond verse 2, and what specific reason does it give?

Accepted Answer

Verse 3 intensifies the comparison: better than both living and dead is the person who has never existed (“has not yet been”). The specific reason given is not abstract despair but a concrete limitation: such a person “has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.” The logic stays tied to witnessing and experiencing evil. Compared to the living, the never-born avoid enduring oppression; compared to the dead, they avoid ever seeing or entering a world marked by these injustices. The statement is grounded in the speaker’s focus on observed “evil work.”

Question 6

What does the passage assume about how power and justice function “under the sun” in the cases described?

Accepted Answer

The passage assumes that power often sits with those who oppress, not with those who need protection. Justice is not presented as reliably enforcing what is right; instead, the strong can prevail, and the weak can be left to weep without support. The lack of a “comforter” implies that normal social correctives—family backing, community aid, or authorities who intervene—are missing or ineffective. The world “under the sun” is pictured as morally disordered in practice: wrongdoing can be stable and public, and suffering can be unaddressed for long stretches of time.

Question 7

What does the text’s use of “better” seem to measure in verses 2–3: moral worth, happiness, relief, or something else?

Accepted Answer

In context, “better” is best understood as measuring relief from exposure to oppression and the pain of witnessing “evil work.” The speaker is reacting to a world where oppressors have power and victims have no comfort. So “better” does not read like a claim about moral worth (living people are not blamed) or a complete definition of happiness. It is a stark comparative assessment under a grim condition: ongoing life can mean ongoing vulnerability, death ends that vulnerability, and never being born avoids even seeing such realities. The passage measures burden and exposure more than virtue.
