Envy as a hidden driver of success The speaker says he “saw” that all labor and every kind of accomplished work can come from a person’s jealousy of a neighbor. In other words, what looks like admirable productivity may actually be powered by rivalry and comparison. He judges this, too, as “vanity” and as a “striving after wind,” something exhausting that cannot finally be grasped or held.
The opposite failure—self-destructive idleness He then describes “the fool” who folds his hands—an image of choosing not to work. This unit sits inside a larger stretch where the speaker keeps saying “I saw” as he surveys life “under the sun” and reports patterns that feel unfair, unstable, or self-defeating. Just before this, he has described oppression and the lack of comfort for victims (4:1–3). Immediately after, he turns to the strength and practicality of companionship (4:7–12). So 4:4–6 works as a focused observation about work: not only can society be harsh, but even productive labor can be poisoned by comparison, producing either envy-driven overwork or a collapse into lazy self-harm.
Historical Context
Ecclesiastes presents itself in the world of Israel’s wisdom reflection, looking at ordinary work, status, and daily gain in a settled society with farms, trade, and household economies. In that setting, “success” was visible and competitive: land, servants, harvest results, and public honor could make one neighbor resent another. The passage assumes a social world where people measure themselves against nearby peers and where the pressure to “get ahead” can be intense. It also assumes that refusing to work has real consequences, because basic provision depends on steady labor.
Theological Significance
The speaker reports an observation “under the sun”: much visible productivity is not simply love of craftsmanship or service, but rivalry—people work hard because they cannot bear a neighbor’s advantage (v.4). The Hebrew wording can support more than one nuance for “achievement” (skill/success vs. morally “right”), and the images (“folds his hands,” “ruins himself,” “handful(s)”) are proverb-like and compressed. The passage also speaks observationally rather than giving a full moral system, which leaves room for readers to ask how far the critique extends.
Explicitly, it identifies envy of a neighbor as a major engine behind labor and accomplishment (v.4) and declares that engine empty in the end. Explicitly, it rejects idleness as another destructive path (v.5). By inference from v.6, the passage commends a vision of “enough” that includes settled quiet rather than endless accumulation—suggesting that more gain can come with more futility when the pursuit becomes restless and competitive.
