Question 1

In vv. 4–5, what sequence of actions and evaluations does the passage set up about vows?

Accepted Answer

The passage moves in a clear sequence: (1) a vow is made to God, (2) payment is delayed, and (3) that delay is evaluated as foolishness. The writer adds an explicit claim about God’s stance: God “has no pleasure in fools,” meaning people who speak commitments without treating them as binding (v. 4). Then the argument is sharpened with a comparison: not making the vow is presented as better than making it and failing to pay (v. 5). The logic assumes vows are optional to initiate but obligatory once spoken.

Question 2

How does v. 6 describe the connection between speech (“mouth,” “voice”) and sin?

Accepted Answer

Verse 6 treats speech as morally consequential. It pictures the “mouth” leading a person into “sin,” implying that the wrongdoing can begin with what is said, not only with what is later done. The verse then imagines a verbal strategy to escape responsibility: protesting to “the messenger” that the vow “was a mistake.” The text rejects the idea that the right words can undo the obligation; instead, it warns that God can be angered “at your voice.” In this passage, speech is both the source of the problem and the attempted cover.

Question 3

What reasons does the passage give for not delaying payment of a vow (v. 4)?

Accepted Answer

The stated reason is theological and moral rather than logistical: God “has no pleasure in fools” (v. 4). The “fool” here is not someone lacking information but someone who speaks commitments lightly and then stalls. The warning assumes God is not persuaded by religious-sounding intent when follow-through is missing. The command to “pay that which you vow” is grounded in the seriousness of addressing God and in the accountability that comes with voiced promises. The emphasis is on integrity of speech before God.

Question 4

What is the function of the “better…than” comparison in v. 5?

Accepted Answer

The comparison in v. 5 functions as a moral ranking meant to slow down vow-making. It does not portray vow-making as automatically wrong; rather, it states that making no vow is preferable to making one and not paying. That framing highlights how serious the failure is: the harm is not only unmet generosity or unfinished ritual, but broken speech before God. The comparison also implies that a vow is not required in the first place (it is voluntary), so the main danger lies in rashly creating an obligation and then refusing it.

Question 5

What possibilities are suggested by the phrase “before the messenger” (v. 6), and how do both possibilities fit the warning?

Accepted Answer

The text does not specify the messenger’s identity, so two main readings fit the setting. One is a temple-related agent—someone who receives, records, or oversees vowed offerings—making the scene about trying to renegotiate an obligation in a public religious context. The other is a heavenly messenger, emphasizing direct accountability to God’s sphere. Either way, the warning works the same: attempting to retract the vow by calling it “a mistake” is presented as an excuse rather than a solution, and the outcome feared is God’s anger and resulting loss.

Question 6

In v. 7, how are “many dreams,” “vanities,” and “many words” related to the earlier discussion of vows?

Accepted Answer

Verse 7 widens the focus from vows to a broader pattern: dream-filled impressions and wordiness can produce “vanities,” meaning empty outcomes. Read in light of vv. 4–6, the connection is that vows can be generated by enthusiastic, unrealistic, or self-protective talk—more speech than substance. The verse does not spell out the exact mechanism, but it links verbal abundance to emptiness and sets “fear God” as the contrasting posture. In this unit, the point is not anti-speech but anti-empty speech in worship.

Question 7

What consequences does v. 6 attach to mishandled vows and evasive speech?

Accepted Answer

The stated consequence is that God may be “angry” and may “destroy the work of your hands” (v. 6). The verse frames this as a serious reversal: the person’s efforts and productivity—what they build, earn, or accomplish—can be undermined. The passage does not define how this happens, leaving open whether the ruin is primarily economic and social (loss tied to broken obligations and credibility) or a broader divine setback. In either case, the consequence is connected to speech that creates and then denies responsibility.
